Here's the guide for the latest GTM feature release: the Google Analytics Settings variable. 
Google Analytics Settings Variable in GTM

GTM just received a major update that will certainly be a relief to users struggling with multiple Google Analytics tags and tag setups.

The Google Analytics Settings variable lets you manage tag settings in a variable, which you can then link to your Universal Analytics tags. The benefit is that any changes to the settings need only to be applied to the variable and not to each of the tags. A time-saver if there ever was one.

My latest #GTMTips post is a reminder of how the Enable and Fire conditions of Just Links, Form, and Timer triggers work. They seem to be a source of confusion especially to new users, so hopefully this article will be helpful.

I can't help but wonder how the UI/UX could be improved to make it more intuitive.

My latest article is a revisit to one of the more common issues with certain triggers in Google Tag Manager.

The Just Links, Form, and Timer triggers all have both an Enabling as well as a Firing condition, and these two seem to lead to confusion quite easily.

Basically, to Enable a trigger means to have it active on a page, listening and recording the respective user event as it occurs. To Fire a trigger means that when the event is recorded the trigger should also fire the tag to which it is attached.

In this article, I once again try to clarify this point. :)

Here's my overview of the new Approval feature in Google Tag Manager 360 (the paid version).
The approval workflow feature in GTM 360

The paid version of Google Tag Manager (360) just introduced a new feature: the approval workflow.

You can use it to add extra transparency and control to how users work within workspaces.

Basically, when changes have been made, the user can submit the workspace draft for approval to either a specific member or anyone with Approve rights.

The approval process includes things like a comment thread (for opening a dialogue between the requester and approvers), send back (for sending the workspace draft back to the requester for extra work), and approval, where the request is finally approved.

Once a workspace has been approved, it can only be submitted for version creation or publishing.

It's an interesting feature, because I can definitely see how it provides a lot of added value, but it's still not mandatory to use. This it's more about organization practices (SHOULD you use an approval process) rather than something that the platform dictates.

Publish / Create now Submit, and Approval workflow in GTM 360

There are some new UI changes in GTM.

Publish / Create Version are now consolidated under a single SUBMIT button. When you click SUBMIT, you see a tabbed overlay, where you can choose whether to publish or create a version out of the workspace draft.

In GTM 360, there's a far more significant change. You can now submit the workspace draft into an Approval workflow, where the draft must be approved by a reviewer before it can be published.

Only send pageviews for pages that are visible

Here's an article by GA engineer +Philip Walton (author of the Autotrack plugin, see https://github.com/googleanalytics/autotrack). In the text, he explores the idea, with which I tend to agree, that pageview tracking in analytics tools is kinda skewed, if you take the metric literally.

A page view, technically, is actually a metric of a page load, i.e. did the browser render the analytics.js snippet and send the 'pageview' command to GA. It doesn't tell you anything about whether the user actually viewed the page or not, as they might have opened it in a browser tab, for example.

Phil's solution is to use the Page Visibility API to delay the pageview until the page becomes visible in the viewport. This is a great way to fix the tools we use to better match our expectations and interpretations of the data within.

Note that this is just one way to approach pageviews. There's nothing inherently wrong (thus I disagree with the slightly clickbaity title) with using pageviews as they come out-of-the-box. The key thing is to understand that this doesn't mean the pages were viewed that often, but rather that they were loaded by the browser that many times. With some sites the difference is negligible, but in some segments (blogs, ecommerce) the discrepancy might be meaningful enough for you to take action.
