Marco Rubio drops some science....

How about this for a rule: If the Bing/Google can answer a question without you having to click, it should be beyond debate.

I know it is controversial to give that much power to an algorithm, but how is it possible for a University of Florida and University of Miami Law School graduate to say that the age of planet earth is one of the great mysteries?

Senator Rubio is charming, he seems intelligent, he has a bright future in the GOP.  But if this election has taught us anything, for a bright person like him to solve for a tiny small esoteric fringe of the Republican party loyalists is not a way to win elections.

Here's his complete answer to the question how old do you think the Earth is?

Marco Rubio: I'm not a scientist, man. I can tell you what recorded history says, I can tell you what the Bible says, but I think that's a dispute amongst theologians and I think it has nothing to do with the gross domestic product or economic growth of the United States. I think the age of the universe has zero to do with how our economy is going to grow. I'm not a scientist. I don't think I'm qualified to answer a question like that. At the end of the day, I think there are multiple theories out there on how the universe was created and I think this is a country where people should have the opportunity to teach them all. I think parents should be able to teach their kids what their faith says, what science says. Whether the Earth was created in 7 days, or 7 actual eras, I'm not sure we'll ever be able to answer that. It's one of the great mysteries.

Please, if you follow me here, then share this post by +Wil Reynolds posted on +SEOmoz to your circles and ask them to share it again and so on and on.
+Google should be understand once for all that it can't go on this way... if the same SEO agencies which are mastering in white hat, content, relevancy and are socially considered authoritative cannot rank for their keywords and are won by sites with exact anchor text links for garbage pages... then the system has really a problem...
Panda wasn't enough... and author rank and social signals are not having still having the balancing impact over an infected link graph.
Oh Google, not only you are moving organic search deeper than the SERPs, but also you still are showing crap because of an agonizing graph....

This past week I gave the keynote presentation at Searchfest in Portland and I hit on a few themes that seemed to resonate with the audience, and Rand. So I wanted to share them here. It’s what I have...

STD Testing Chicago
Tinley Park, IL
I was concerned about a recent encounter and was looking for a fast, convenient, and most of all, private STD testing solution...boy am I glad I stumbled onto this company! The care advisors were extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and were able to put my mind at ease. I was able to get tested in no time, and most of all the testing process was real discreet, just the way I like it...I would recommend this company to any one of my friends.

An excellent question indeed

A question for Google (and the industry at large). Lately, we've seen a lot of statements during/after algorithm updates of the form "affects X% of queries". Unfortunately, that could mean a handful of things. I think the possible explanations fit into two broad groups:

(1) % of unique queries (keyphrases)
(2) % of overall query volume

Let's say, for example, that we live in a world where there are only four search queries:

(a) iphone 5
(b) justin bieber
(c) platypus pants
(d) charlie sheen

For every 100 queries run on our parallel-universe Google the volume breaks down as follows:

(a) 50
(b) 40
(c) 9
(d) 1

That's right - suck it, Charlie Sheen. Now, let's say that query (c) is impacted by an algo change. By definition #1, this would affect 25% of queries. By definition #2, that same algo change would only affect 9% of queries.

Given that a significant percentage of queries are new each day and that volume is probably easier to measure, I strongly suspect that it's definition #2. On the other hand, these statements are probably being made from simulations or test roll-outs (since we often get the % prior to the full algo update's impact being known).

To me, this is just an issue of transparent communication - I don't think knowing this would provide anyone an unfair advantage or help SEOs game the system. I'm a scientist, and I value precision. So, if any Googler would be willing to chime in ( +Matt Cutts , +Pierre Far , +John Mueller  etc. ;) ), I'd love to hear their perspective.

An Impossible Design Trifecta

Every day I hear people ask where they can get a fast, cheap and great looking site design. And well, it's an impossible trifecta. My suggestion, is pick two:

Great Design + Fast Turnaround: you can get a great looking site designed at a fairly fast turnaround, but you can also expect to pay a pretty good premium for it.

Fast Turnaround + Cheap: you can get a site setup fairly quickly, and at a nice discount, but don't expect it to be pretty (remember, you get what you pay for).

Great Design + Cheap: yes, it's possible to find a good designer who can knock out a nice looking site design for you, and at an affordable price. But don't expect for it to get done quickly (they probably have other higher paying design clients ahead of you).

That's pretty accurate, don't you think?

I loved testing with STD Test Express. These guys really made my experience as painless and as comfortable as possible. I felt like my privacy was protected at all times and this particular testing lab was easily accessible and conveniently located. I also couldn't believe how fast I got my results and even had an option to speak with a doctor over the phone. Overall, a thumbs up experience.
