I've often fancied building something using Amazon's AWS services, but always found falling back on running my own server/database combo to be easier and quicker. But this looks really intesting - hardware integration with AWS sounds pretty cool.

So I finally got the light-up guitar finished and built. As a learning tool, it works really well. As an awesome instrument to play at the next open mic.... well, as a guitar, there are probably a few improvements needed!

Just as I put the light-up guitar together and got all excited about fitting the bridge and stringing the thing up, there was a last-minute snag - too much technology, too little space!

I've been making stuff look pretty in Unity. It was surprisingly easy.

Putting together guitar kits is great fun and very rewarding. Trying to fit them together after making extensive changes is not so easy - trying to work out why something doesn't go after attacking it with a router can be tricky!

Not all opto-isolators are the same. And very few are actually suitable for use with Midi. Of couse you can get away with a reversing transistor, but if you can't be sure of where your MIDI chain is getting its power from, it's probably best to isolate each input, just in case. Jason helped us get this one working!

I got my light-up-guitar-fingerboard fully working today. It was really exciting to select a scale/chord pattern and see it appear on the fret lights. But after poking around with some new firmware, things got doubly-exciting after I got a MIDI-in port working and could display any old midi file on my guitar neck! Things are looking pretty cool now...

While decoding incoming MIDI messages I discovered a little program called RealTerm. It knocks Putty into a cocked hat!
