Whenever I see stuff on precision motion, I never see anything on DC motors with optical encoders. Is there anyone tinkering with DC+optical encoders?

Yeah, I would also like to see that. I'm building one of those little CNC-machines and whenever I hear about servos, I think of something like this http://www.torquesystems.com/images/servo_motors/brushless-servo-motor-250.jpg Even though that servo has something in common with the one shown in the video, it's still a completely different world. As is feedback-controlling a stepper motor to compensate step skips made by stepper. And also micro-stepping hasn't been even mentioned... :)
