The Diskery

This well-loved institution, The Diskery is Birmingham's oldest record shop. The store opened in 1952 by Morris Hunting and has been supplying music in the city ever since. The shop is best described by Sam Colley, The Diskery have ‘loyally stuck to the shop fitting blueprint for the classic vinylstore. Faded promo posters - record covers stapled to the roof - and handwritten cardboard labels indicating quirky categories like; ‘Bits and Bobs’, ‘Big Band Goodies and Much More’, and my personal favourite ‘Cheapo Rock’. I especially love the faded sign writing outside the store that promises ‘Good Disco Music’. But, of course, it’s the wonderful team at the Diskery that really makes the store so special.’

Great atmosphere, lots of people just come in for a chat. No rip-offs. Some unusual albums. Fairly priced. Listening station. Thousands of old 7" records.

It had exactly what I wanted there and more, all at a decent price. Most albums are probably £5-7 but you can pick up some great classics and compilation albums for £1-3. It's surprisingly cheap and very friendly staff; a must visit for any vinyl fan who lives in or is visiting Birmingham.

I want a particular CD for a St.Valentine Day present. Quite excited about my first visit to such a famous place and can't wait to see the store's selection. I have a wide range of musical tastes and I sure I am going to be like a little girl in a sweet shop. I shall be coming over from Redditch to Birmingham next week (so I may have my Mom with me) I was born and bred a "Brummie" even after 44 years in Redditch, Brum is still my home.

Always a friendly service and a good selection of many used vinyl (which suits me fine) plus some new stock. I got a parking ticket for £80 once when I got carried away in the extensive jazz section so allow plenty of time!

Came in on Monday, 5:15 pm, during normal opening hours. Shop was closed, no announcement + it was raining heavily so I returned back to hotel with no records, wet and disappointed... I was traveling next day back home to Slovakia, so there was no chance to try again...

You won't find a friendlier place in brum, I've popped in several times since I moved down here and always come out with a bagful of records (which isn't good for the bank). I can't recommend visiting this place enough if you're even just the slightest bit into music and or records. Personally I've acquired some real gems in the shop, such as a 1st pressing Fragile by Yes, and a virtually mint 2nd ed. Of Wish You Were Here- as well as a large collection of disco 7"s. Long story short, its record mecca and any music fan has to visit it at least once. (P.S. you might get mulled wine over the Christmas period if you're lucky too!)
