30 seconds is definitely overkill; I can live with 10.

When tech support tells you to wait 10 seconds, they aren't totally full of it.

Seems easy enough...

Learn to Read Chinese in Eight Minutes
http://chineasy.org/
http://www.forbes.com/sites/bruceupbin/2013/04/25/learn-to-read-chinese-in-eight-minutes/

The creator of Chineasy, ShaoLan Hsueh, says that "if you can learn just the top two hundred characters, it is enough to be able to read about forty percent of popular Chinese literature." The idea is to make it easy to get started using drawings and stories to learn a few characters, and then learn how to combine them.

Hmm. Maybe I could learn a little bit in eight minutes, but the real question is: would I remember it? I studied Hebrew for several years and then forgot all of it in one summer vacation!

What do you think?

So much for that X-wing Trench Run for my 40th birthday.

For all you +30s out there who occasionally wonder the same thing...

Just because you're no longer in school, that doesn't mean you have to give up on making new friends. What are your strategies?

Sergey did an amazing job with both my cars; he spent longer than I thought he would (2 hours per car versus the half-hour or so other places usually take) but they look good as new. In fact I'd say the cars look the best they have since the day we bought them, and that says a lot considering I've had probably a dozen other shops detail my car and never do as good of a job as Sergey did. These guys really are Awesome. They were able to squeeze me in at the last minute and were great throughout the whole process; the shop even made sure to call me and provide an ETA of when Sergey would arrive so I'd know if he was running late or not.

When our regular pet sitter couldn't accomodate us for a last-minute trip, I searched online to find a place to send our fur babies for a feline weekend retreat. After an initial visit to The Purring Parrot to see the rooms in-person, I was sold. Our normally shy cats seemed to enjoy the space and our super-curious orange tabby fell in love with the stairs/shelves and top-level window view. We were only gone a few days and thus only received one email update (but they will send you daily updates if you request them). Upon pickup we were provided with detailed notes of our cats behavior while we were gone, including whether they played or not, how much they ate, etc. Like others have said, the best part about this place is the webcams. Every room has one mounted above the door and you can go to their website any time (day or night) and watch your cats sleep or do whatever it is they do. The night-vision feature was especially nice! This place really is like a spa for cats and birds. Your "kids" will get all the attention they need, and the staff is both professional and courteous. One of the owners even made sure to give our cats' insulin personally instead of letting any of the interns/assistants do it.

I hadn't been to the dentist in quite a while and decided to give Dr. Nyugen a shot as he had good reviews on several websites. I called, made an appointment, and was treated very well as soon as I walked in the door. The staff is very courteous and cheerful and will do their best to make you feel like you want to be there! The techs who cleaned my teeth and took x-rays were polite and helpful, making small talk when appropriate and explaining everything they were doing every step of the way. Their techniques are very patient friendly in that they do what they can to minimize the pain people usually feel when sharp tools are being forced into their mouths. Going to the dentist is usually an excruciating experience, but for the first time since I was a little kid I'm actually looking forward to my next visit here.

The shop may be small, but it's kept it meticulously clean. The chair is comfortable and the decor/ambiance is a perfect blend of old-school barbershop charm with a modern feel. David's attention to detail is amazing. You get what you pay for, and then some. His calm demeanor and chill personality make the experience relaxing. This isn't your typical cheap in-and-out haircut, and David makes sure you get the best bang for your buck even if it take the whole hour you're schedule for.

I'm not a big coffee person, but the food here is amazing! The croissant melts are delicious: flaky but not burnt or dry, covered in savory cheese and ham (or tomato for the vegetarian option). The bagels are always perfect: crisp on the outside, just a little chewy on the inside... If you're in a rush for food, just call your order in ahead of time as they can get pretty busy in the morning.
