Donating to the site, other than Google, that I use on a daily basis is a no-brainer.

A friend of mine just had a meeting at the Google Quad office, and is trying to find something to do to kill time until his flight leaves out of SFO at 8PM.

Any suggestions? He's currently on his way in an Uber towards NASA Ames, but would love suggestions. He's a mathematician, nerd and used to work for Saab AB.

He's a brilliant childhood friend of mine. I know, it sounds near impossible for that statement to yield true. Actually, I grew up with quite a few very intelligent childhood friends, which might seem even more odd considering the the village population was < 600 at the time. To make this even harder to believe; both my parents worked as teachers at the village school at the time. I think this particular case though, managed to avoid at least one of them, if not both in that school. ;p

While Gmail has changed their interface/functionality for the 10th time, for no good apparent reason, and most notably managed to hide my chat buddies at the bottom of a 30" screen (today they haven't populated all day, with a nice generic "seems like we're having some troubles" message, that's okay, crap goes wrong at times when rolling out new feeds) but this is actually a design flaw, and created a bunch of social buzz words for inbox that I have no idea what they mean and therefore never knowing if I have in fact seen all my emails or not, one product is constantly getting better.

Oh no, it's definitely not Google maps that also changed layout (not even to mention the growing pain from map drawing slowness issues) and at the same time managed to hide all useful functionality such as traffic, predicted traffic at other times, the alternate map views, well, pretty much everything that was useful. They have since started to rectify their changes, to be fair.

UPDATE: I just took a look at the new maps interface, and it seems like most things are once again in some sensible place.

No, I'm talking about Google Drive! A project that at one point in time I never thought would even launch. Today they have made the interface simpler and better. It makes sense, it loads more data on the screen and it's easy to use - even the first time. It of course requires some understanding of hierarchical folder/file structures and permissions for sharing objects with other accounts, but they have done an excellent job. It integrated beautifully with Google docs, it's available in many formats; a file handler drive in desktop environments, Android and iOS apps, and excellent functioning in the browser (my preferred way to do everything).

I love it when Google gets it right and instead of overthinking and trying too hard to steer its giant ship around startups and social buzz words. Do what you do best Google - solid business and home services that just works, scales like no other and is simple to use. Add collaboration between all the products and other user accounts, and I will have most of my computer needs covered, other than occasionally checking in on my old Facebook friends and my twitter stream of course, and all the new interesting start ups - growing seeds for the next web generation.
