The mighty +JP Auclair
has released a new profiler for flash. http://www.sociodox.com/theminer
This is big news for me: his old FlashPreloadProfiler was really helpful, because it was so small and simple that I could even get the boss using it. Profiling for the masses.
It did have some drawbacks: it was basically profiling itself at the same time as your swf, so it could slow things down and skew the results sometimes. But since it has unique advantages too, I think it's very useful.
Now FlashPreloadProfiler has been replaced, by The Miner. I've had a look, and first, I'm really glad that JP is carrying on developing this. It really fills an important niche. It's a big project for one person, so I hope he makes some money from it.
So far I can't see any big changes in this new version. It doesn't look surprisingly different. There are, however, a bunch of helpful improvements, which make it easier and more logical to use. I'm not sure yet whether there are major changes under the skin, which actually affect its function. It also sends some google analytics requests, which don't seem to give away anything and can be turned off, but are an indication of the new, more commercial orientation. To be honest, I'd probably want to put analytics in if I'd developed it.
In summary, I haven't yet been blown away, but it's still a solid profiler, and great value even though it's not free anymore. I'll request a few licences for work.
