Today I was back working on the fisherman sculpture, adding lower arms & basic wire hands.  The hands will eventually be formed from Stone Art air drying clay. I had a little left over from making the wall that the fisherman will sit on, so I've started to add a little to one hand to check that the process will work - clearly a lot of work still required to get the hands looking realistic, but that's a job for tomorrow...

Yesterday I taught 5 lovely ladies the art of fabric sculpture in Towcester.  3 of the group had a previously been to my 2hr taster session to make a wall plaque & wanted to take it further by creating a 3D figure sculpture.

I hope you will agree from the photos that they all did really well & each went home with a beautiful sculpture to display in their home or garden.  Well done girls!

The next step in creating my fisherman sculpture was to make the 'stone' wall that he will be sitting on - a piece of the quayside wall where he will sit to mend his nets.

This was made using a block of polystyrene, shaped with my hands & then covered in several coats of Powertex Lead & Stone Art.  Finally, as few sprays of bister to give an aged look.

A 2Hr taster session to learn the art of fabric sculpture.

During this workshop you will make a wall plaque using recycled materials & Powertex fabric hardener.  The plaque will then be coloured in your choice of Powertex pigments.

Once dry, the plaque will be suitable for display either indoors or in a garden setting.

Today's sculpture task has been to create a plasticine mould from a bamboo carved face I have & cast a plaster face from the mould to use as a base for the Fisherman sculpture.

The plasticine was pushed onto the bamboo face to form the i...mpression, then gentle peeled off, & built up at the side walls, before testing if it was watertight. It wasn't!

Water leaks fixed, the mould was then dried out with kitchen paper before mixing the plaster & spooning into the mould.

Pic shows the original bamboo face & the plaster equivalent. A face of character I think you'll agree...

Today I have started it a new sculpture in readiness for submission to a gallery at the end of February. With the exception of Durantia (see website), this is the largest sculpture I will have attempted, & this time, I have no pre-loved m...annequin to use as a base, so I need to build the body from scratch.

Over the coming weeks I plan to post progress reports on this piece of work, to give an insight into the processes involved.

The first step was to ensure that the proportions of the figure would be anatomically correct, so I drew the body in 2D form on cardboard, marking waist, shoulders, elbows & wrists, knees & ankles.

Clearly, there's a long way to go before this figure looks human, let alone a fully dressed fisherman in 3D form!!!

Looking to include printed images into a larger artwork? Why not try Powerprint?

Simply take any LASER printed image, coat with Powerprint, apply face down to your chosen base material (wood, canvas, MDF, plaster, painted surface, silk, cotton, etc), smooth out to ensure no air bubbles are present, & then heat with a hair dryer for 10 mins to set.  Finally, using a damp sponge, remove the backing paper to reveal the image.

NOTE: Image will be reversed so remember to reverse print any text at the laser printing stage.

So, its now only 7 weeks to go until Christmas & at Comfy Frog it's a busy time for us.
Today has been a making day - small decorative (but useful) storage boxes with cherubs on the lid, & some simple Christmas trees. Should be popular at the upcoming Christmas Fairs.

For all you crafters out there, don't forget the Hobbycraft & Art Materials Live Show is currently on at the NEC Birmingham (until 9th Nov). All things Powertex are on Stand G12, where we're running free Make'n'Take workshops, so why not come along this weekend & have a go? Hope to see you there.
