Every day across America, the American Academy of Nursing and its members create and execute knowledge-driven and policy-related initiatives to drive reform of America's health system.
Introduction
The Academy's 2,200 members - known as fellows - are nursing's most accomplished leaders in education, management, practice and research. They have been recognized for their extraordinary nursing careers and are among the nation's most highly-educated citizens; more than 80 percent hold doctoral degrees, and the rest have completed masters programs. Sixty-four percent of the fellowship work in academic settings, 30 percent work in service and practice settings, and about 3 percent work in state and federal government agencies.

Join us in supporting the groundbreaking “Have you ever served in the military?” campaign, spearheaded by BWF grantee The American Academy of Nursing. By asking one simple question, health care providers will be able to improve the quality of care they provide and more effectively treat our servicemen and –women. "Every day we treat patients and have no idea if they have served our country," said Cheri Plasters, a nurse in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at the University of Alabama Hospital who will be implementing the campaign. "I saw the need and wanted to do something, especially since the challenge relates to UAB Medicine's core values."
UAB Medicine has partnered with Joining Forces, a government initiative that supports members of the military and their families by promoting various employment, education and wellness initiatives, in an effort to better identify and treat patients who serve or have served in the military.

in the Indianapolis Star, Academy CEO Cheryl Sullivan highlighted Congress's part in the VA tragedies. Sullivan noted that the Senate has yet to confirm two high-level VA appointments, include Academy fellow, Linda Schwartz.

Urge your Senators to confirm these appointments. Our veterans deserve accountable and capable leadership at the VA. http://owl.li/xBUz5
Step it up, Congress. Time we hold you accountable for the Veterans Affairs tragedies, too. The Senate has yet to confirm two of the VA secretary’s three assistant secretary positions. Now let’s add the confirmation of a new VA secretary to the backlog.
