So I blog about Baseball, NYC History, Booze and everyday experiences. Guess that makes me a well-rounded individual. No?

It's been a while since I've done one of these videos. Unlike prior vids where I taste spirits and cocktails, this time I've decided to give a taste to one of the beers I recently picked up at Family Market, 29-15 Broadway, Astoria, NY 11106.

For this video I tried the Hoshihikari Echigo Beer which is described as being a Super Premium Rice Lager produced in Niigata Prefecture.

I found it to very mild but flavorful which I like in my beer. I'm not fond of super bitter beers especially some of the harsh IPA'S that have come out in the last few years. It has a nice crispness and a clean finish on the palate. I highly recommend you having some. Arrigato to Family Market for carrying this beer.

A couple of weeks ago I went to brunch with Momma-San and friends and I saw a listing for Hennessy Paradis on the menu. At $230 dollars for an ounce and a half, I was curious to find out what made this particular cognac cost so much. Here is what I found out.

The Old Fashioned Manhattan

Bulleit Rye
Carpano Antica
Grand Mariner
Orange Bitters

It's a little sweeter than your standard Manhattan. But it works.

Today's Ask SiscoVanilla A Question is based on my video from Christmas Eve.

Now on Christmas Eve, I had myself a Dirty Tanqueray Gin Martini. So the question someone asked me was this: What kind of Gin do you like to use in a Dirty Martini.

I'm going to answer the question in two parts. First, I DON'T use an aromatic Gin like Hendrick's. Why? I find Hendrick's to be such a beautiful and aromatic gin. Its bery appealing to both the nose and the palate. To mask it's flavor and aroma with olive brine is a waste of not only the gin but of your money. You just can't enjoy the Hendrick's. But if you want to do so, then so be it.

I do use a nice crisp London Dry Gin such as Plymouth, Tanqueray, Beefeater and Bombay Sapphire for my Dirty Martinis. I feel the flavors blend together better. But that's just me.

What do you think. Any recommendations? Drop me a line and let me know.

I was looking through the December 19, 1985 issue of the New York Times and came across a number of old booze ads. One that stood out to me was the ad for Carpano Punt e Mes. I look into what Carpano Punt e Mes is. Check it out.
