April 29 - Omaha, NE

I will be setting up here this weekend. It is a small show, but there are normally some interesting books from vendors around the region. Outside of selling at the show, I have no affiliation to the person running the convention. Below is their information.

April 29
Omaha, NE
The Omaha Comic Book Convention being held at the Comfort Inn & Suites Omaha Central located at 7007 Grover St (I-80 Exit 449 72nd St.) This is on the other side of the street from the venue we were at up until 2012. The convention is open to the public from 10 AM to 4PM and admission is FREE! Plus you get something cool free when you sign up for our mailing list! For info contact Alan @ (309) 657-1599 (no texts those are for rich people) or use the contact link at the bottom of the page.

Just realized why I love Dazzler so much. I knew this connection intellectually, but seeing the movie poster today made me truly see the light. #ONJ4EVA ;)

Anyone else realize they have a Freudian comic connection? Does that influence your collecting?

C2E2 was a blast. I did not get there for Friday, so these are my thoughts from Saturday / Sunday. It is possible some of these views would be different had I been there all three days. This is from an attendee POV and not a seller POV.

So many more comic venders than I had expected. it was massive and I only spent my time looking at and through comics. I did not get time to head over to the artist alley, and really did not notice the cosplay after I was inside the show.

I really wish I had allowed more time to look through the art. That left me a little sad.

Prices were either high or low. I did not expect that. It made it easy after looking around to get the deals and feel like you were not overpaying. That is not common for my previous convention experiences.

Not big discounts, though. Even from the high priced stores. Some folks were happy for cash, but it was only 10% or less. Some places were not even accepting cards.

Some buy not many females buying and looking at comics. I did see quite a few tweens looking and buying. One seller said a girl, around 10, came up and bought an old Action Comics and handed over 4 bills in cash. Not sure the book, but that a young person was dropping that kind of scratch on older books was great to hear about.

I did use CGC on-site grading and it was awesome! Coming in with raw books and leaving with slabs is sweet! The folks working there were swamped (duh), but very polite and kind. I even got nods from the guy handing my books back after grading on some grades. It was cool that even with all they see, he could still acknowledge my books and not just be jaded at that point. I am not even sure it really costs that much more to have it done. Basically $50 for the SA books and $35 for the others. I would suggest trying it if you get the opportunity at a convention you are attending.

Not many moderns at all, minus the bins, at the booths. However even the bins were full of solid books from bronze to modern. There was very little fluff to be found. The bins had the goods. Many key spec books mostly $2-5 dollars and they were in stunning shape. It felt like the dealers there were there to move books make money. From my viewing, there was a lot being passed made.

Very few variants, which is not surprising given there were really not many moderns on walls. No one was really talking about them either, except some comic shop exclusive covers for the Red Goblin book. The only variants I did see were slabbed with few exceptions.

Speaking of, there were not many slabs there. I would guess I saw less than 10% of the books in cases. Many, many raw books. Folks were looking for raw books mostly as even the dealers with slabs were not talking much about them. They were constantly pulling raw books to show. That was pretty cool.

I saw lots of horror books selling. Most of them were pre-code, as you would expect. Not many horror magazines, though. Mainly comics. No western / crime / romance either. I did see some GA jungle / war moving and a little bit of the super heroes.

Golden age books were out in force. I have never seen so many golden books not only out and available, but being looked through and purchased. There were no less than four incidents where I saw people in their late twenties / early thirties drop low to mid four figures on GA books. Not just one (presumed) key either. It was interesting. I felt like I was watching a rather high dollar conversation in a foreign language. To me, this was the biggest surprise.

Hot books: ASM 300 / YtLM 1 / FF 1 / FF 48 / FF 52 / MSH 13 / SS 1. Seems like everyone I saw was looking ‘out-loud’ at Marvel books. I saw more raw 181s than I ever have in the same place. I did not see many MS 5 /Eternals / MM 1 / HoS 92. Lots of Avengers on walls / ASM / FF / Action / TEC, but not as many X-Men / JLA / Flash / Batman / Teen Titans.

I did notice that the lower grade books did not seem to be moving much. There were many copies of books that were popular titles but just sat on walls. Not sure if people were not interested in them or if condition / price were factors. I am not saying that ‘high grade wins.’ However it was interesting that most of the ‘keys’ in those conditions were not moving while equal / worse condition golden age did not hold people back.

All-in-all it was a wonderful time and i would strongly suggest people make the effort is possible. It was not too expensive to get in ($75 for all three days pass) and I think it was not even sold out. I would spend more time in the bins than I did. Historically they have not yielded much for me, but this was much different. It paid off to take hours looking at walls before buying.
