SMART COOKIES DON'T CRUMBLE
She's very excited.  My ten yea-old granddaughter.  It's her first ever attempt at grabbing an office.  With her imposing poster(three feet long from chin to knees) that reads "I may be a Rookie but I'm one Smart Cookie".   She's in a field o...

IT WASA VERY GOOD TIME
There are days - sometimes weeks- when reverie seems to hover, like a shroud covering the ranch.  It touches memories blown from shelves, book spines and kodachrome-heavy albums.  Moving among these threads of the whole cloth of our lives, one can re...

EAT STUFFED CABBAGE. . .IN A MATTER OF SPEAKING
It seems the Summer of 17 has been quite the sizzler.  Gods of War have held the headlines.  National, ethical and economic issues/conflicts have preoccupied bylines.  (Albeit the shores of the Chesapeake Bay and its environs remain blissfully 'Southern' qu...

A Pen For my Thoughts. ° . - .
Wow .. To day's thoughts are being brought to you by new best friend  'pen'.  Indeed .  I can hardly believe it myself but the tip of its little gray barrel is tumbling right along the bottom of my tablet's surface leaving nary a scratch but a bright...

Are the Stars out Tonignt?
They say (and don't you always wonder who 'they' are?) that words are the control mechanism for one's personal magic.  Indeed, this notion is by habit hammered home to one's children and grandchildren.  Would that the spiffy club of Madison Avenue 'ad...

Well, dear readers, I've once again fallen prey to commentary relevant to current political events.  Would that I could say my pen was dripping with remorse.  Mayhaps your commentary will yield a change of subject matter.  Or not.  If brevity be the soul of negliges, surely humor undermines the spirit of my writing. Enjoy! Lorane. . . .

OF VICE AND MEN
In 1926, Ernest Hemingway's "The Sun Also Rises" was published by Scribners under the masterful editorial guidance of Max Perkins.  Prior to publication, two editorial discussions were held by author and editor.  The first dealt with words and  phras...

Unable to "write a comment as Lorane Leavy" when publishing (as invited by my host, BlogSpot), I take the opportunity today - when dinner, rather than Rome is NOT burning.  It has never been my wont to mount the 'political/international' soapbox (These days arthritic joints militate strongly AGAINST mounting just about anything), but I felt moved to not simply ruminate upon but applaud the efforts of our country's military - and their dauntless, well-rested leader, General "Mad Dog".  When asked yesterday, "What keeps you up at night?", he never missed a beat but stated flatly, "Nothing.  I keep other people up.".  Here, here, General!  I do believe your contagious fearlessness and dogged march forward and ON those who would maul and destroy innocents must and will be emulated.
In the sixties, when I was young, foolish and rebelling (without a cause), I told my parents I was going up to the Cloisters to hear Gregorian Chants when, in fact, I was headed down to Washington Square to lock arms with similar fools AND Joan Baez to revel in a bawdy rendition of "If the cops get in our way, we're gonna roll right over them!", a performance filmed by local news media and watched with appalling interest by my parents at 6 o'clock that evening. Thoroughly busted and ashamed, I sat burning in their silence.  (Some things need no commentary.)
Today, Memorial - ne "Decoration" -Day, I sit at the keyboard, firing words and paragraphs that in my mind are burning arrows joining the barrage of munitions that pierce the hearts, condemn the souls and erase the memories of those who would sleep but for the General.

I'm No Fiddler!
I've heard that Nero played his fiddle while Rome burned.  Guess he demonstrated his lack of the ability to multitask when matters of import were occurring on the world stage.  Well, far be it from me to criticize.  Obviously, I can't UNItask (contin...
