This Week in Science

A rundown of some of the weeks best science news. I particularly like the one on Teleportation and the estimate that it would take a stack of hard drives 20 light years thick to teleport a human!

Dutch Virologists to Create Deadly New Flu Strain

Ron Fouchier is working on a deadly version of the H7N9 bird flu virus in the hope to asses the risk of this disease. This kind of research is not without controversy, however.

More Science in Motion

Another compendium of mind-blowing science gifs :) I especially like the Meisner solid - its not a sphere, but it maintains a constant height when rolled, pretty amazing. The one below is of water forming an ice crystal - note the hexagonal crystalline structure. Please follow the link for more.

OpenGlass Project Makes Google Glass Useful for the Visually Impaired

Working in the medical device industry I always have a keen eye (no pun) on the interface between man and machine. In the face of the hipster chic element of Google Glass Its easy to lose sight of the potential this tech could have for people who are visually impaired. I can finally say that I think Google Glass is cool!

New microchip sorts white blood cells from whole blood

Scientists at MIT hav developed a new microchip that can quickly separate white blood cells from samples of whole blood, eliminating any preliminary processing steps — which can be difficult to integrate into point-of-care medical devices.

Veebot, the Robotic Phlebotomist That Makes Drawing Blood Faster

Veebot combines the latest in robotics and imaging technology to ultimately speed up the process of drawing blood or inserting IVs. The patient slides his or her arm into an inflatable cuff, which acts as a tourniquet. An infrared light illuminates the inner elbow for a camera that searches for a suitable vein using software that compares the camera’s view against a model of an arm’s veins. Next, ultrasound confirms that the chosen vein has sufficient blood flow for a successful blood draw. Finally, the robotic arm aligns itself with the chosen vein and inserts the needle.
