More fundamental than religion is our basic human spirituality. We have a basic human disposition towards love, kindness and affection, irrespective of whether we have a religious framework or not. When we nurture this most basic human resource – when we set about cultivating those basic inner values which we all appreciate in others, then we start to live spiritually.

It makes sense for politicians to target any sort of spending, but I also remember when every news agency and pundit went after this story. Apparently nobody asked the scientists what they were trying to do with the shrimp.

Karen Armstrong founded the Charter for Compassion. A former nun and school teacher, starts this interview with two things related to religion she has learned in her life:

1 - Belief, as in the acceptance of certain doctrines, is actually not very important. She discusses doctrine as an action, or a call to action, not just an acceptance of a particular idea.
2 - All world religions insist something is wrong with your spirituality if it doesn’t lead you to practical compassion, to a profound respect for other people, seeing other people as sacred, viable and unique.

That's the kind of religion I can get behind.

Still appalled it took years and a political compromise - which apparently excluded cancer treatment for 9/11 workers - to pass any bill. Shameful.

I didn't realize there were fewer introverts in the world than extroverts. I've done the Myers-Briggs Tests and have been borderline I/E, but I think I too need to embrace the introvert and admit that as much as fun as talking to people can be, I can't do it endlessly.
