5. Make a list of your top 5 values in life. Eliminate everything and everyone that no longer serves your top values

Here’s the scene ... I am practicing my breaking and entering skills, so I break into your house tonight at 2 A.M. 

But instead of stealing your stuff, I simply wake you up out of a dead sleep and ask you one question:

What are your top 5 values in life?

You have ten seconds. Can you answer?

By the end of this post (if you do the exercise), you will be able to. Most people have a vague idea about what they value, but they are not super specific about it. 

For instance, do you value Freedom higher than Harmony? 
Do you value Wealth greater than Health?
And so on. 

Here’s what I recommend to get clarity and better align your life with your values:

Step #1: Make a list of at least ten values that are important to you. I recommend you do this with a blank page first and then hop over to this page to see if there any values you might not have thought of: http://www.stevepavlina.com/articles/list-of-values.htm

Step #2: Narrow this list down to the top five and put them in order.

When you are clear on your values, decisions become easy. Should I take this new job opportunity in Phoenix or stay at home closer to my parents? I don’t know, match it up against your values.

For the super accelerated reboot, eliminate everything and everyone that is not in alignment with your top values. For example, if your #2 value is Harmony and you have one “friend” who is constantly provoking you into pointless arguments and criticizing your ideas and efforts, it is time to massively reduce your involvement with that friend (down to zero).

If you have a problem with the idea of  "eliminating" people from your life, simply dial them down to a zero for 30 days :)

Carry this list of top values around with you for 30 days and actively think of ways you can invite more people, places, and events that align with those five values into your life.

Every day, during your morning routine, ask yourself, "How can I bring more [VALUE] in my life?" Write down the ideas that come to you.

One other note: This list of top five values doesn't have to stay the same for the rest of your life. You may go through a phase where HEALTH is your #1 value and other times where MINDFULNESS takes the top spot. I recommend repeating this exercise once a year.
