G+ Exclusive Series: 33 Ways to Reboot Your Energy

19. Stop watching TV and reading news for 30 days.

But wait until you finish reading this Google+ series :)

Better yet, while you are on a Reboot kick, just give your TVs (all of them) to Goodwill and get on with your life.

Here’s the math. It’s ugly. The average American watches 3 hours and 46 minutes of TV each day.

I know YOU don’t because you’re on Google+. But still, that adds up to nearly 9 years glued to the tube by age 65!

And, we’re not done yet ...

No newspapers. No Daily on your iPad. No news feeds in your RSS reader. Unplug from the media for 30 days.

You are now on a media fast. What you think, feel, observe, interpret will no longer be dictated by a talking head, a fembot, or an unknown man behind the curtain. Or someone else's prejudice on social media.

Now, you are free to think your own thoughts, feel your own feelings. Do not seek external validation about how you feel or think about things. For 30 days. See where you go from there.

If you happen to overhear that one group in the Middle East killed 4 people in a different group in the Middle East, don’t run to your favorite sources to tell you how to feel about that event.

Sit with it and see what you feel from the inside.

But the idea here is less about seeing how you respond to the news and more about not even plugging into the concept of the news.

The concept itself is already a pre-filtered vision of the world. And that is not your vision. It is Rupert Murdoch’s vision or one of the handful of people who own these conglomerates.

I have friends all around the world doing amazing things, some in small ways, some in really big ways. I have yet to see any of them on “the news.”

But they are part of the news feed in my head because I know that Karen is out there making art that makes people think in a different way. That Raquel is teaching kids how to read. That Bobby made it possible for someone to go to college that otherwise would not have gotten that chance. That Angela is a big sister to a very special little girl. And so on.

This is “the news” that I pay attention to.

Anyway, enough about me. Have you unplugged your TV yet?

P.S. If you need a little nudge to help lock in your new decision, here's an audio assault from Ned's Atomic Dustbin with "Kill Your Television" from 1991: Ned's Atomic Dustbin - Kill Your Television (v2)
