A relief that she's OK, but nevertheless there's a lot that we can and should learn from this.
Nayla Kidd was an engineering student at Columbia University when reports that she had gone missing went viral. She was found perfectly healthy nearly two weeks later, only telling police she wante…

+Ondřej Čertík The people who already do, other scientists. The system we had in the 70s, block grants, was much more effective than a system where Congressmen try to determine national scientific objectives.

Prof. Patek is awesome.
Duke University biologist Sheila Patek has faced criticism from lawmakers over her research into mantis shrimp and trap-jaw ants, with some calling her government-funded studies a waste of taxpayer money. But according to Patek, not only do her findings have important practical applications, but scientific inquiry is most fruitful when knowledge is sought for its own sake, not to justify budgets.

Reminds me of a joke my advisor recommended for when the projector failed. It was done at the expense of a mathematician, who would find that a 'solution exists' for a burning hotel (http://blogs.agu.org/sciencecommunication/2016/03/31/so-a-scientist-walks-into-a-bar-the-importance-of-comedy-in-science/). I guess between this joke and forgetting how to integrate, I'll never be embraced by the math community!

that would be a hell of a moment.
On Memorial Day, the groundbreaking miniseries, Roots, returns to television screens in grand fashion across the A+E Networks. But those looking for LaVar Burton and Leslie Uggams will be quite surprised…

No, YOUR city has 14-story-tall eggs that digest 15,000 tons of sewage to generate biofuels
New York City is poised to become the country's largest producer of an unexpected type of green energy. This fuel source you can make yourself - and you certainly do. Anthony Fiore, director of the NYCDEP Office of Energy, explains how NYC's Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant is turning sewage and food scraps into "black gold."

Wow. BYU should be ashamed.
Fox TV show Crime Watch Daily welcomed new correspondent Elizabeth Smart to the team this week. For her first episode with the show she explored the response of her alma mater BYU to students who were sexually assaulted during their time on campus.

Indeed. I really like Mormons in general, but this needs to change, such policies against rape victims are unacceptable.

This has it all: the Indian diaspora, the awesome side of melting pots, professional sports, NPR, and a guy named basically +David Green except more hoity toity. Naturally this falls under #MeanwhileInCanada .
David Greene talks to Harnarayan Singh, play-by-play voice for Hockey Night In Canada Punjabi Edition. Singh's dramatic calls have won him fans even beyond Canada's large Punjabi speaking minority.

Haven't yet listened to this, but a likely related piece of personal trivia: growing up I would fairly regularly play street hockey in the parking lot of my neighborhood Gurdwara. It was not unusual to be invited in for lunch.
