He is talking about it the same way that a craftsman would talk about the quality of his tables. He is explaining the important parts of the process, and how he learned to do better at them.
He either was already completely detached from the inhumanity of the task, or he became detached from it as he did it more and more.
The clear thing is that there is no empathy, just the task at hand, and that you had to do it in a quality way.
