The #Venice Carnival frittelle recipe is known, with different variations, in many regions of Italy.

25g beer yeast
300g flour
1/4l milk
100g caster sugar
3 eggs
50g butter
70g raisins
30g pine nuts
lemon peel
2 tablespoons brandy or rum
salt
peanut seed oil for frying

Wash the raisins and dry with a clean cloth. Dissolve the yeast in warm milk and melt the butter in a bain-marie. In a large bowl put 50g of sugar and knead with the eggs, add the melted butter, yeast, raisins, pine nuts, lemon zest and rum and stir until the dough is smooth. Slowly add the flour and a pinch of salt. Work the mixture vigorously and let it rest for an hour until it has doubled in volume. Heat the oil well and, using a spoon to give them shape, fry the Frittelle di Carnevale until they are puffed and golden. Drain on absorbent paper and serve sprinkled with the remaining sugar.

Service is really bad! I booked the room for 4 nights but the booking is automatically cancelled because of my late arrival, which means the room is not guaranteed unless u check in on time. However it was written on the booking confirmation that your room is guaranteed for late arrival.

This hotel ruined our stay in Venice. First, even though we were told we could check in at 9am before booking, they did not allow us to check in until 3. The shared bathroom on the first floor is a claustrophobic's worst nightmare. It's very long but really, really narrow. The toilet shakes and there is no soap. The room was old and dingy, the sheets did not feel clean (later proved that they really were not), and the walls were paper thin. We were able to very clearly hear the couple having sex above us, the front desk couldn't do anything about it. When we asked to change rooms because of all the noise, there was a bedbug where I had previously been lying. The room they put us in was right next to the bathroom so we heard people doing their business for the rest of the night. THEN, when we went to check out (at 5 am), our wallet was missing. It was definitely stolen there because we had had it the night before. The staff was moderately helpful. The lobby is deceptively cute. Not worth what we paid for it.

Booked two double rooms, got a double and a single: they still tried to charge us the full price! We booked this online via the lonely planet. Soon afterwards we got an email from the hotel saying our credit card details were not valid. Assuming the mistake was ours, we made another booking. We then got an email from the hotel saying they wanted to take a pre-authorisation for the whole booking and we had to email the card details. This was not part of the booking terms and conditions (a 10% deposit had been taken) and I was suspicious because emailing card details is very risky so in the end I agreed to phone them with the card details. Later we discovered that both deposit payments had gone through just fine: the hotel was basically making the rules up as they went along. When we arrived at the hotel we were told that there had been a ‘problem with the booking’ and instead of two double rooms we could only have one. Obviously we protested and eventually they gave us a double and a single. However this meant my wife had to sleep in a single bed with our 4 month old son and I had to sleep in a double bed with our other two kids. Would have been hard to get any sleep in any situation: in 35 degree heat this was a nightmare. Not to mention we booked adjoining family rooms and ended up with rooms on different floors. On reflection I strongly suspect the hotel had another booking after ours at a higher rate and they gave our room away. The rooms were very dilapidated and in need of plastering, repainting and clearly had had no maintenance for a very long time. The hotel is a dump. A shame because it is a nice building in a lovely quiet location in Venice. The owners should be ashamed of themselves for letting a beautiful building like this get in such a state. Now this takes the biscuit. When we came to check out, they tried to charge us the full amount for the original booking! And they told us they would not take into account the deposits we had paid online, claiming not to have received them from the booking agency. I had to negotiate very hard indeed to get the price reduced to something reasonable and they still refused to honour the deposits paid. Don’t stay here. Period. Very grubby hotel, very dishonest people.

This is really well placed in quieter part and if you are lucky to get one of the better rooms - ours was No 49 you will get value for money. We were part of a group of 11 and most of us had good rooms and as alarge group were put in a separate breakfast room not so nice as the rest as had white plastic chairs but access to same buffet - all good and plentiful but coffee a bit crap... I think it's one of those places that would be best described as shabby chic but in the end you get what you pay for. I would say some of their website photos are a bit deceptive as the place was a bit tatty (not dirty). Overall was a relaxed place to stay and the staff were very friendly.

Great budget hotel in Venice. Was here with my gf in November, paid less than €60 for a double per night with breakfast (think it was a special offer + lil extra for canal view). They told me that in the high season prices tend to be much higher... Overall good experience, the hotel is one stop away from San Marco, we had room 15 with bathroom and canal view where (so they claim) Ezra Pound used to sleep in. Nice helpful staff, decent breakfast (buffet). No complains! Venice is simply extraordinary... I liked the fact that in the winter it's not busy, no lines for museum, good prices and deals. Grazie Hotel Salute! Def trying to come back next year...
