I had not heard of metamaterials being a possible route to room or near room temperature supercondutors. That would certainly be an easier path than trying to make metallic hydrogen, which is hypothesized that it could be a room temperature superconductor. The question is if it is also a room pressure one.

If and when scientists achieve to make metallic hydrogen (a team at Harvard believe they did, using extreme pressure, but this has not been independently verified yet - and I heard they.. lost their sample) will it stay metallic when the pressure is released (like diamond), will it sublimate, or will it decompress violently?

If metallic hydrogen is stable at both room temperature and pressure it would presumably be both a superconductor and the ultimate rocket fuel. It has been estimated that it would provide 3 to 4 times the specific impulse of the best rocket fuel. However if a gram cost ~$10,000 to make would it matter?
