A Chicago man who owns a Belleville nursing home, the site where an 85-year-old woman was found strapped to her wheelchair at the bottom of a flight of stairs, owns 12 other nursing homes in Illinois, 10 rate at the bottom of federal Medicare rating with a one-star score.

Deployed service members often cannot sue lenders for violating laws that protect them from repossessions and foreclosures because of legal language that forces them into arbitration.

The federal government recently revised the way it rates nursing homes. The result was a downgrade for many facilities across the country. We talk about quality of care in America's nursing homes.

The Consumer Voice for Quality Long Term Care needs your help today! Bipartisan bills have been introduced in the U.S. Congress that include an extremely harmful provision for nursing home residents. The SGR Repeal and Medicare Provider Payment Modernization Acts of 2015 (H.R. 1470 and S. 2000) both contain a "standard of care" provision that would make it more difficult for violations of important federal quality of life and quality of care standards - such as residents' rights, nurse staffing, or assessment and care planning - to be used to establish a legal case of negligence against a facility.

Ask your member to exclude nursing homes from this provision today. This legislation is likely to be considered in the House of Representatives on Thursday morning and shortly thereafter in the U.S. Senate, so Congress needs to hear from you now! Here's a link to a quick and easy form to reach your representatives today.

Founding partner of Levin & Perconti. Chicago-based lawyer representing victims of medical malpractice, nursing home abuse and neglect, personal injury and wrongful death.
Introduction

Steve is a nationally known trial lawyer with more than 30 years of litigation experience and success. He is a founding partner at Levin & Perconti, a Chicago law firm that represents clients in all types of nursing home, medical malpractice, personal injury and wrongful death matters.

Steve is well known and highly respected for his work on behalf of victims of medical negligence and nursing home abuse and neglect. He was one of the first lawyers in the United States to represent elderly clients in personal injury and wrongful death matters against nursing homes and has established a reputation as one of the country’s top litigators in the area of long-term care litigation.

He has represented hundreds of nursing home residents who have been victimized by improper care and treatment, achieving record-setting verdicts and settlements in these cases. His work representing victims in nursing home negligence lawsuits has brought national attention to this rampant and unacceptable problem, sending a message that mistreatment of one of society’s most vulnerable groups will not go unnoticed.

Steve has dedicated his practice to helping people who have been injured, or the families of people killed, because of someone else’s mistakes or improper conduct. He stands by the belief that lawsuits not only bring relief to injured victims, but also motivate healthcare providers, businesses and manufacturers to make systemic changes to provide better care, service, and safer products.

Steve serves on the Leadership Council of the National Consumer Voice for Quality Long-Term Care (formerly known as the National Citizens’ Coalition for Nursing Home Reform), an organization dedicated to protecting the rights of nursing home residents and their families.  He is also the former chair of the AAJ's Nursing Home Litigation Group. Steve's comments on nursing home litigation have been quoted in national news publications including The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

Steve was recently listed in the Illinois: The Top 100 list in the February 2015 issue of Chicago Magazine, a listing of the attorneys who ranked at the top of the Illinois Super Lawyers nomination, research and review process. This was the second year in a row he was named to the list. He has been named an Illinois Super Lawyer every year since 2005.

Steve’s peers have chosen him as one of the top Illinois lawyers in his field through the Leading Lawyers Network. Steve was recently selected by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America® 2015 in the field of Personal Injury Litigation - Plaintiffs.

Steve has been honored by the Martindale-Hubbell American Law Directory, and awarded their “AV” rating for his legal abilities and very high ethical standards and is a member of The National Trial Lawyers, an organization composed of The Top 100 Trial Lawyers from each state.  He is also a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, The Trial Lawyer Honorary Society.

In October 2012, Steve received an award for Trial Lawyer Excellence for the Highest Reported Illinois Verdict in a Nursing Home Malpractice case.  The award was presented by the Jury Verdict Reporter, a division of Law Bulletin Publishing Co.

Steve was recently featured in the 2013 Leading Lawyers Consumer Edition Magazine. The article talked about Steve's early career and his role as a pioneer of nursing home litigation. Here is a link to the article.
