I'm Giddy I Tell 'Ya by MCL

Mount & Blade Warband where have you been all my life?

My goal in computer gaming has been:

Let me do my thing.
Let me take a squad of guys with me.
Let me build my village/kingdom.
Send bad guys to mess with me when I ain't lookin'.

Mount & Blade Warband is a unique game. Open ended political, production, war, fps on a pony. You level and skill up. You find allies who specialize in crap you aren't interested in doing. You raid, pillage, conquer and poke with pointy sticks.

Oh and you can go online and poke all your friends with pointy sticks too.

Mount & Blade Warband where have you been all my life?

We're together now. That's all that counts.

Oh and also comes with Napoleon era DLC. Not that it would matter to someone, like me, who was once a volunteer Sergeant in the LXXVIIIth Highlanders. Nope that's not attractive one bit. /sarcasm |off

Have been playing a LOT of Mount and Blade: Warband.

If you played POTBS it is for you. If you ever rode a stick horse as a kid. It is for you. Like Warhammer Fantasy? It is for you. Ever do SCA or period re-enactment or Ren Faire? It's for you. Ever play computer games and chase down other players and zap or shoot or hit them with a shovel? It is for you. Ever want to be a knight or a Cossack or a crossbow sniper or a Viking or just about any middle ages military type? It is for you.

Honestly it is the high water mark for gaming for me. If GW could do something similar with their IP then I would be just plain giddy.

As it stands I am just plain giddy up.

Local solo play: You start as a dude and enter a well designed sand box to do what you want. Want to be a bandit. Be one. Want to be a noble Lord or Lady? Be one. Anything in between those two? It is there for the taking.

Internet Multiplayer: Drop in a game for fun chaos or join an online regiment for fun, player generated events and good conversation on vent.

DLC: More internet multiplayer madness with the same engine but with during the the wars in the time of Napoleon.

Seriously. With the game and the DLC both it is 29.99 on Steam or at GameFly and no monthly fees to play. Dollar per dollar I see it as the current champ in computer gaming.

SWTOR Post Mortem by MCL

The game zeitgeist from the developers was a fabulous solo experience as long and you didn't repeat it. Latest tools added to encourage repeating.

The zeitgeist from the players is that we want a place where we can poke around and be starwarsy or where we can bludgeon each other in PvP. Screaming for fixes and content from developers who are just now realizing the game is popular enough not to pull the plug on.

Findings:
It is a pain in the ass to play with someone who is not either around the same level or the same spot in the story line if you want to PvE together.

PvP is fun but after you learn the strats and maps it is only an exercise of sharpening your claws.

Level 50 PvP is not as fun as level 10 to 49 PvP. People are less tactically flexible and more prone to quit and log out or hide in the back and loaf.

There are folks, I have heard and think I have seen, who quit each match in the final seconds to turn off their XP to be able to still be big but play in a fun war zone. I was not one of those people. Dang it!!

Thoughts:
It is a game that will be on my rotation to go visit but I won't stay there. Other games are WoW where I check in about every 1.5 years, and COH where I do about the same.

My reply to Imperial Operatives whining about not having a PBAOE Knockback ability in SWTOR:

QFE:

I have recently revisited my healers after leveling my BH to 50.

There is a concept in SWTOR that is not normally thought of in most games. Mobility vs Immobility.

As far as mobility goes the Operative/Smuggler is the only healer who can be purely mobile. With the right spec after 30 there is no reason to stand still as an Operative/Smuggler healer.

Comparisons:

Merc/Commando Healer:

Mobile talents:
The "free" heal.
Their insta-cast shield that is limited to one target.

Stationary talents:
Everything else is both stationary and interruptable.

Energy recovery:
Long cool down; same as any other heavy type.

Force User Healer:

Mobile talents:
Shield Bubble on a two second cool down and 20 second lockout.
Instant heal + HOT on six second cool down

Stationary talents:
Everything else is both stationary and interruptable.

Energy recovery:
Based on their health which soloing is fine but in PvP is madness with the slow cycling of their HOT.

Operative/Smuggler Healer:

Mobile talents:
Spammable HOT. No target # limit. No Cool Down.

Stationary talents:
Reliable energy regeneration prior to 30 requires one stationary cast every 45 seconds.

Energy recovery:
After level 30 the condition to trigger has a chance to trigger automatically from the spammable HOT.
Oh ... and they have a second energy recovery heal on a cool down.

Separation from the target, my friends, is the best armor in any game of this sort.

Operative/Smuggler healers after level 30 have no need to ever stop moving; never need to stop and set up for what they can do better in a PvP grand melee environment than any other AC which is keep an entire skirmish up on its feet. When needed they can stop and use their stationary abilities to discourage focus fire as well. When they are focused upon they can separate and block line of sight

or

just

plain

vanish.
