Just watched the movie and honestly the idea of a movie along 12 years is interesting and technically appealing, but I found the story was bland. Yes, milestones, but without a deeper explanation. The family running away from a violent and abusive drunk step dad and nothing is much explored deeply on the kids or the mother; then another drunk partner, which is hinted to have been kicked out of their lives, not visible effects in the life of the kids and mom. I guess it impacted everybody's lives, but it is not explored. A 15 year old kid shows up at 12:15
AM, confessing to have dunk alcohol and done pot, and we only get "we will talk tomorrow morning". I missed a lack of conversation or exploring the effect of reaching those milestones in life.
The character that I rally felt alive and evolving was the dad (Ethan Hawke), changing as he was getting his life straight.
Again, technically interesting, but I felt I would have gotten more from reading the diaries of the kids than from the story told in the movie.
