"When Andrew Breitbart died yesterday, it was natural to turn to the effort he led to injure Sherrod's career and reputation. We all know that in the specific case of the Spooners, Breitbart's facts were wrong. But I want us to consider the greater truth -- that Sherrod had not simply helped the Spooners, but that she had -- since the days of Lester Maddox -- lived as the exact opposite of the racist Breitbart portrayed. Breitbart did not simply get the facts of an incident wrong, he got the broad facts of an entire human life wrong. Confronted with such a deed, the person who lives in empathy, who sees the aggrieved party as human, must necessarily embrace a firm and full-throated contrition. Breitbart chose, instead, to go looking for ways to make himself right."
In the mid-1960s, SNCC, one of the most important of civil rights groups of its era, began to split at the seams. Since its inception, the group had committed itself to the eradication of white supremacy strictly through the twin pillars of nonviolence and integration. SNCC members, like their fellow activists throughout the South, endured threats, beatings, bombings, and shootings, all of which they greeted with Bible verses and song. The tactic...

by Shaker scatx, a liberal, a feminist, a wife, a mother, a professional historian, and an optimist. Yesterday, the Texas Health and Human Services commissioner signed a rule that says that any clinic or other "affiliates of abortion providers" who participated in the Medicaid-funded Texas' Women's Health Program will no longer receive financial support from the state. This $40-million/year program is jointly funded by the federal government. The...

Go read this thing by se
I. We Own You I’m taking classroom driver’s education at the high school, a class that is technically open to the public, although no one seems to take advantage of this. I figure, why pay for classes when I can schlep to a high school at seven in the morning for six weeks. I am the only member of the public there, and the high school students alternate between looking at me curiously, trying to figure out where I fit in, and ignoring me. I slip ...

I wrote a profile of a very worthwhile local charity, serving individuals and families in crisis, called Safe Place.

I. “My feminism will be intersectional” redux I set myself up for failure. I know. I like big, unachievable goals that I will, all on my own, conquer. Because I am a sucker for failed end of the year balances. Because when this time of the year rolls by, I sit and ponder on what I have not yet achieved. To that purpose, I start every year with some big, unattainable resolution. For 2011, I had set two such objectives (probably to ensure failure a...

Boy, you really have a talent for bringing the loonies out of the woodwork. I especially like the "economists" who scoff at Krugman and Keynesian theory without actually, you know, understanding it.

Rick Santorum talks to Real America: "President Obama once said he wants everybody in America to go to college. What a snob," said the former senator from Pennsylvania. "There are good, decent men and women who go out and work hard every day and put their skills to test that aren't taught by some liberal college professor to try to indoctrinate them. Oh, I understand why he wants you to go to college. He wants to remake you in his image." Yes. As...

I don't even know where to begin with this article. I just don't. I keep picking pullquotes to splutter about, and then getting mad at different pullquotes.

“Sting does this thing where he’s a lobster from the beard down.” - I honestly have no idea what Lucas means by this, for once; but we are watching that Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame 25th Anniversary Bono Show or whatever and for a second I thought that we were all dead and Sting was the chosen people. Or something, but I think: I hate electric blues, but it’s not like I’m be like mad at B.B. King but I’m sure you all know that I’m totally mad at how ...
