Nice.  I've been thinking about a similar design for years.  There's a patent (might be expired now) on at least a similar design.  I started taking welding classes last January so that I can build one.  I was thinking planetary gears as alternative to external gearing - not sure there's an improvement there.

Basic Information
Great place for do-it-yourself ventilation supplies. I replaced the furnace plus all the vent ducts in my home a while back; I bought everything except a rectangular main duct (spacing requirements prohibited me from using large round ducting) from Bayshore. It can be a bit daunting to find some boots, but everything is organized well enough that I could find what I needed eventually. I particularly liked the fact that much of the ductwork they sell is 26ga rather than the flimsier 30ga sheet metal. They also have more to offer than home depot--or any other supply house in the area. Staff were very helpful. They helped me to select insulation, screws, tin cutters, and tape. They offered suggestions as to how to solve some sticky issues with installation, and alternatives where my first choice didn't work. I'd strongly recommend starting with Bayshore (and the CA mechanical code book) if you're thinking of adding to or replacing a vent system. --By the way, I found Audubon Plumbing Supply to be the best source for rectangular duct work and plenums. They're on the web.
