The Secrets of Electric Cars and Their Motors (https://goo.gl/WDDnGp)

Internal combustion engines have been in use for approximately 140 years, and are widely understood by both car enthusiasts and car owners. However, while the combustion engine gets a lot of positive attention, electric motors are not so well-received. Despite having been around for over two hundred years, electric motors are still often viewed as being less efficient than combustion engines.

This issue is compounded by the fact that it can be challenging to find technical information on electric motors and many people who do own electric vehicles may not even know where the motor is located in their car, what they look like or how many there are.

In reviews of electric vehicles, the electric motor often gets little attention, or may not be mentioned at all, which can result in buyers not considering that as a reason to purchase an electric car. It may be much easier to understand a V8 engine rather than a motor which can at times seem too incomprehensible to be understood.

The Best Cars Nobody Bought in 2017 (https://goo.gl/uZ1hB7)

There were many cars and trucks that saw high sale numbers last year, but quite a few perfectly good models didn't get the attention they may have deserved. What this means is you may be able to find one of these cars for cheaper than its original price and get an excellent car out of the deal.

- Cadillac ATS - 13,100 Sold
The Cadillac ATS is a solid sports sedan that has all the right features. These include a lightweight chassis, manual transmission, and rear-wheel drive. But the ATS was outsold by the Fiat 500, meaning this model will likely get less attention or be pulled from the market if sales don't improve.

- Jaguar XE - 9278 Sold
The Jaguar XE is a sporty alternative to the BMW 3-series. However sedans don't sell as well in the United States as in other countries, and Jaguar's tiny four-door faced that issue and didn't come out ahead.

Nissan Working on Mind-Reading Cars (https://goo.gl/FVJ9Pb)

There are all kinds of new technologies coming soon to the auto industry, but one company is going a step further and working on building a car that can read your mind.

Although this sounds like something out of a science fiction movie, Nissan has announced that their engineers are researching technology that uses brainwave-sensors to detect what you intend to do in the following fraction of a second, or what you expect your self-driving car to do.

For anyone who is driving their own car, the brain-to-vehicle technology could drastically reduce reaction times. Sensors could detect your instinct to put on the brakes, and this action could be performed before your foot has even touched the brake pedal.

Not only that, but researchers are investigating what brain waves look like when the car does something that a driver does not expect. This information might be used to make autonomously-driving cars less frightening for their occupants by making the car behave the way a driver would as much as possible.

Self-Driving Cars: Why 2018 Will Be The Year The Rubber Hits The Road (https://goo.gl/5hVHDz)

If you've been waiting impatiently to get a closer look at the various models of self-driving cars, then 2018 is your year.

Many industry experts have high hopes that GM, Tesla, and Alphabet will be more open about their contributions to the self-driving car market.

This will become easier as self-driving regulations, insurance, and costs reductions are finalized in the next year.

There haven't been self-driving regulations in California for several years, but the cars aren't truly driverless. They have a "backup" or "safety' driver in the front seat who is prepared to take over the controls if necessary. That and these vehicles are limited to testing conditions, not public use.

However, in October, the California Department of Motor Vehicles proposed updates to its regulations which allowed companies to deploy autonomous vehicles on public roads without human drivers, even eliminating backup drivers. These rules may take effect as early as June.

Hyundai and Kia Will Offer AI Assistants in 2019 Cars (https://goo.gl/m5hH1K)

Hyundai and Kia are both known to be early adopters of in-car technology and that's even more common now that voice assistants are increasingly essential in all kinds of vehicles. Both Korean automakers have announced that they are planning to include AI assistants in their new vehicles beginning in 2019, and that every car will be 'connected' by 2025. Hyundai went on to say that they have been collaborating with SoundHound to create an Intelligent Personal Assistant (based on Houndify) that both offers remote control of your home and car and also makes proactive suggestions (such as reminding you of meetings).

Although this may sound very similar to what other voice assistants already do, the companies are clearly counting on people being interested in an assistant that offers "multiple-command recognition." In other words, their systems can turn on the lights and check the weather forecast at the same time instead of stalling as other AI systems are prone to do.

Velodyne Just Made Self-Driving Cars Cheaper (https://goo.gl/FevfDN)

Last year, Velodyne, a lidar supplier was hopeful that its new factory would help to lower pricing on its most popular products. Approximately a year later, it looks as though the company has reached their goal.

Velodyne announced recently that it has dropped the price of its highest-selling lidar system, the VLP-16, cutting the cost in half. When the VLP-16 first went on sale in 2016, it cost eight thousand dollars, and so the price cut is a substantial saving.

This move is a direct result of the company's manufacturing efforts in their new 'mega factory.' The facility was opened in San Jose California in 2017 and it began manufacturing their HDL-64 system, which produces four times the number of lasers as the VLP-16.

"Since its launch, customers have been lining up to purchase the VLP-16 and we've been able to meet that growing demand by expanding production and developing automated manufacturing for LiDAR sensors at the Megafactory," said David Hall, founder, and CEO of Velodyne.

BMW Sold More Plug-in Cars This Year Than GM and Probably Nissan too (https://goo.gl/xhpoUq)

As the year comes to a close, automakers are tallying up their various sales reports, and when it comes to plug-in cars, one company stands out from the rest. BMW has stated that they have achieved their goal of beating last year's sales by delivering 100,000 electric vehicles around the world.

By the end of November, they reached that target and have sold almost as many electric vehicles in 2017 as it did between 2013 and 2016.

That means they are ahead of GM and very likely Nissan, two other companies who are well known for their high volume of sales of electric vehicles.

But, BMW gets most of its success from plug-in hybrids, rather than full battery-electric vehicles as Nissan does with the e-NV200 and Leaf.

Meanwhile, Tesla projects that they will deliver over 100,000 electric cars by the end of 2017, although it won't be clear if they've met their goal until early 2018.

BMW is justifiably proud of what they have achieved, but are eager to continue moving forward.

"Selling 100,000 electrified cars in one year is an important milestone, but this is just the beginning for us," said Harald Krüger, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG

Self-driving Cars Need Lots of Sensors to Handle the Snow (https://goo.gl/kc5c32)

One of the biggest challenges for self-driving cars has long been driving in adverse weather conditions. One issue is that cars have trouble handling the weather, such as "seeing' their environment through rain and other forms of precipitation. Snow can obscure lane markings that cars need to navigate and rain may cause vehicles' sensors to be unreliable. In addition, self-driving automakers based in California and other temperate climates have to send their cars to Michigan or other states so they can get experience driving in the snow.

However, a group of researchers at the VTT Technical Research Center of Finland claim they have designed a car that is meant to drive in poor weather conditions. They have announced that the car, called Martti, has successfully driven itself over a snow-covered public road, and reached 40 km per hour (25 mph). According to their spokesperson, Martti is the first fully autonomous car to complete such a feat.
