My mechutan, Nissan Jaffee, sharing the struggles that we all navigate in this very difficult time. So many interesting thoughts... and a sweet peek into one of the mutual lights of our lives in the wise little voice of our granddaughter.
So much has been going on, and I've had so much stuff going round and round in my head. Maybe that's why I've been taking so many naps lately. A 13 year-old girl, Hallel Yaffa Ariel, who loved to dance and who wrote beau...

What Then Must We Do?
Yom shishi, 25 Sivan 5776. Sigh. I love Eretz Yisrael (the Land of Israel) with all my heart. But I hate summer in Israel.
And it's never Israel's fault that I hate summer in Israel. It's because the child-eating monsters come out in the summer, more than a...

A Bit O' the Irish, Jewish Style
Yom rishon, 28 Adar 5773. Stunt Man played a fifteen minute "Irish Set" for his brother's wedding, staying in character throughout.  He was so effective at bringing joy to his brother and his new sister-in-law and their guests that one attendee quipped, "Th...

Repaint Your Own Reality
Yom shlishi, 24 Adar I 5776/1 March 2016. "I never paint dreams or nightmares. I paint my own reality." ~ Frida Kahlo I feel like a new bride, who just moved into her new apartment! That's what a fresh paint job will do for your spirits. We have loved this ...

"If my life is taken in a terror attack, please do not make me into a cause célèbre for your personal propaganda. Please do not use me as a pawn to promote whatever agenda you firmly believe in." My beloved son has gotten a bit nihilistic in his old age -- happy 26th, dear David -- but he does hit the nail on the head in so many of his poignant remarks in this post. Worth internalizing and putting into practice, even though we plan to live to be elderly people with many wonderful stories to tell our great-grandchildren.

Where are the mass protests from within the moderate Muslim community? Anybody?

The silence is deafening, broken only by a brave voice or two in the wilderness.

If you do not believe that Islam supports the murder of Jewish children in their beds, Jewish teachers out driving with their families... then speak up. Otherwise, even the most patient among us can only assume that you agree with what is being done in the name of your religion.

We tend to forget that Hashem keeps His promises ... We want only to see fulfilled only those promises of reward and blessing ... We forget that Chazel did not want to see the era before the final redemption, because the horrific trials of this period are the final test to ascertain who will merit eternity ... and we forget that suffering atones and provides merit where it would not otherwise have been attained .... and we forget that acceptance of Hashem's perfectly righteous Judgement, (so severe, but also with a kindness beyond our level of understanding) is an essential part of faith ... We should remember that Hashem promised never to forsake our people, even though some may seem to us to have been discarded ... and that Hashem waits for us to turn only to Him for help, and not to depend on the gifts of man or the strength of horses.... If we remember these things, we will prevail!

Though this post is five years old and much has changed, it still seems to me like a good way to travel the poignant distance between Yom HaZikaron and Yom Ha'atzma'ut.
Yom revi'i, 7 Iyar 5771. Romi Sussman took this photo of us. Thanks, Romi and Josh! The Dearly Beloved and Yeshiva Bochur were bonding over beer and barbecue on Yom Ha'atzma'ut, Israel's celebration of her sixty-third year as...

I never mind an opportunity to repost my sons' work. But this time, there is a special reason. I just learned that an 11th grade Tanach teacher read and discussed this with his students. Not only did the students enjoy the post, but they agreed that we are not supposed to seek revenge, that revenge is in the hands of God, not man. It would be nice if our neighbors would teach their children the same. ‪#‎ProudMommy‬ ‪#‎ProudOfMyPeople‬

People have the power to develop every moment of life - why waste any of it on worrying how long it may last, or how it may end? Every individual has only the amount of time which G-d has set for a particular lifetime, whether much or little....Every individual has a different potential to fill...and every individual has a set of ways in which the end may come. All we have in our hands is to choose how we use each precious moment of life given to us, and to choose how to respond to what trials or pleasures we may face. We can make guided choices or random choices, but the results come directly from the choices we make. So let's choose to accept whatever comes as a gift from G-d to help us achieve our potential, learn from our mistakes and keep moving forward and upward! Just enjoy the whole process of development as the wonder that it is!

Raises crops of boys. Lives in and loves Israel.
Introduction
I am anxious for everyone to get along, starting with the Jews.  Scratch that.  Starting with religious Jews.  Hmmmm...  probably still a lot to strive for.  How about religious Jews in Israel?  In Gush Etzion?  In my yishuv?  How about let's just start with my family.  Okay, guys.  As Abba says, "World peace starts at this table."  Let's get our act together, and bring Moshiach.

In small ways, every day, I try to to do my part to rectify the error in judgment of my zaydies, the meraglim. "See these big grapes? We can make really big wine!"
Bragging rights
I've been a waitress, a disc jockey, a cartoonist, a soldier, a secretary, a teacher, proof-reader, editor... But my favorite jobs are: wife, mother, photographer, artist, writer... friend.
