An amusing automobile at Lava Butte
Miscellaneous thoughts on politics, people, math, science and other cool (if sometimes frustrating) stuff from somewhere near my favorite coffee shop. Wednesday, May 15, 2013. Geo 365: May 15, Day 135: Jurassic Parking Lot. The closest Jurassic rocks are likely 150 miles away or so, ...

Going underground
Dana highlights a recumbent fold on the road between the parking area and the park offices at OCNM. We managed to arrive here a bit before 10 AM, when registration began for the tours, and got onto the first tour at 10:45. The tour was to last 90 minutes, but may well have gone on a bit longer, ...

One of the best, most diverse days +Dana Hunter and I have had together, plus good time management, plus ending day before we were both brain-dead.

I haven't read any conjectures, or even any primary literature, on the topic. That said, my guess would be that as the toe of the lobate flow encroached onto the soft sediment, some portion of that edge would encounter a weak spot and plunge into it. That could create a propagating "rip" in the sediment, following the edge of the toe. Those initiating spots might also be the origin of the radial dikes seen in several areas of the photo.

To reiterate, I'm just guessing here. I have read no details about these oddballs, I'm merely speculating.

Exquisite beauty out of unspeakable chaos... that's what this area is all about.

A final glimpse of the coast, before I hop back over to central Oregon.
A panorama of three photos, taken at Otter Crest State Park. We're looking south here. At this scale, you can't make out the sea cave at Devil's Punchbowl, on the point in the top middle, but full-size, I can make out that dark spot. In response to a G+ query, I guessed that the reason for the ...

The biology is contingent on the geology in both the case of the lily and the water ouzel. http://outsidetheinterzone.blogspot.com/2013/05/geo-365-may-12-day-131-may-10-teasers.html
We had hoped to get a good view of the Cascade Crest from the summit parking lot at Marys Peak, but we've already had a month of summery weather with little rain. Additionally, the humidity was headed up; as a result, the haze was nearly as bad as during our visit last summer.
