I'm currently running Debian's rolling release (aka "testing") on my main machine and have added some stuff to make that nicer. First thing I have is configuration and package management. Since I have relatively few machines, I am using a metapackage per machine that installs some configuration ...

Testing is not a rolling release.  Never has been, never will be.  The closest thing to a rolling release in Debian is Sid, Unstable.  Still not quite the same thing, though.

whitespace-mode is more powerful than show-trailing-whitespace.  It also shows whitespace messes at the beginning of the line.

Nominating RMS to be a Computer History Museum Fellow

Assuredly RMS is an important historical figure in computing, for GCC and GDB if not the GPL.   The criteria

http://www.computerhistory.org/fellowawards/nominations/

specify a history of contributions in different fields, and RMS is definitely.   I have drafted a nomination form

http://she-devel.com/CHM_Fellow_nomination.pdf

and welcome suggestions, as co-authors or anonymously.

Questions  -

Which cscope library is best?    I've been using xcscope but am curious about the others.
This page needs info on how to actually use these tools. I believe I've installed the pieces correctly, but now I need to know how to actually use them. An intro on some of the basic commands would be greatly appreciated.

Stewart Brand is the greatest living visionary
==================================

Stewart Brand, the man who got NASA to release the original photos of the Earth from space, who founded the Whole Earth Catalog and pioneering digital community The Well, appears again with another inspiring initiative.    Brand argues convincingly that using cloning and whole-genomic replacement in zygotes can revive species that have gone extinct in historic time.   Furthermore he makes the case that doing so is important, and that we can make the future Earth's environment better than the one we have now.    He even explains how, in the future, the technology may enable a gay couple to produce a child who is the genetic progeny of both of them.

Social Justice and Alumni Giving
===========================

Did you, like me, graduate from elite, famous educational institutions of higher learning?   DO NOT give them a donation.

Why: they don't need the money.   For sure such institutions dole out financial aid, but consider the impoverished but worthy school in your locality.       Where would your $CURRENCY have the greatest impact?    Isn't the point of your donation to help struggling students?

My donation recipient for the last 5 years: University of California at Merced

My actual educational institutions: fabulously wealthy ones

The ultimate identity theft protection
===============================
Californians, you can freeze your credit history so that no one can run a search on you without your express consent.   I have not received one unsolicited offer of a credit card since I signed up.   The service is free.
If you live in California, you have the right to put a "security freeze" on your credit file. A security freeze means that your file cannot be shared with potential creditors. A security freeze can help prevent identity theft. Most businesses will not open credit accounts without first checking ...

Global key bindings in Emacs. Global key bindings in emacs. What's hard about that, right? Just something simple like (global-set-key "\C-m" 'newline-and-indent) and you're all set. Well, no. global-set-key gives you a nice key binding that works ... until the next time you load a mode that ...

"Spacemacs is first intended to be used by Vim users who want to go to the next level by using Emacs."

I have to admit I didn't look into it, but I kind of sympathize with that sentence.  Although personally I wouldn't want to meddle in both worlds.  Sometimes one has to leave in order to be able to arrive somewhere else.

Is Obama announcing a marine sanctuary in international waters?   I'm puzzled.   Why would citizens of other countries care if they don't want personally to import their products into US?
The president says he will use his executive authority to create the world’s largest marine sanctuary to protect diverse habitats from harmful activities.

It can be in international water (beyond 12 nm) but inside the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), that is, inside 200 nm.  A nation is allowed exclusive control over things like fisheries, mineral or oil extraction, and so on inside the EEZ, but cannot ban navigation of ships of other countries, civilian or military.

"Thanks to Plus, Google knows about people’s friendships on Gmail, the places they go on maps and how they spend their time on the more than two million websites in Google’s ad network."
The social network, which gets relatively modest traffic, has remained valuable to Google because of the broad view it can give advertisers of people’s activity and interests.
