After a lapse of some months, the Leland Place dinners resumed on Saturday, October 15, with a well attended feast featuring chicken cacciatorie on penne pasta, sauted green and yellow squash, tossed salad, and ice cream with fresh strawberries. A dozen appreciative Leland residents enjoyed the meal in their basement laundry room---which is doing double-duty as a dining room while the facility's kitchen and regular dining room are renovated. Thanks to volunteers Andrew Mathis, Marsha Silverberg, and Dave Skidmore for their efforts.

Our next dinner is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 19 -- the Saturday before Thanksgiving. It offers a timely chance to give back before giving thanks later in the week. We very much need volunteers to keep the dinners going. Volunteers gather in the church kitchen at 2:30 p.m. with the goal of serving the meal at Leland around 5 and returning to the church by 6:30 p.m. Volunteers generally share the cost of the meal (around $20 per volunteer) but volunteers looking to donate only labor are very welcome.

Leland Place is a facility of SOME (So Others Might Eat) on North Capitol Street. It offers formerly homeless men in recovery from alcoholism and addiction a place to live while they look for work, pursue training, and save enough money to return to independent living.

Federal employees can donate to SOME through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). SOME's CFC number is 74405.
