QUOTE OF THE DAY...
"Man needs to show that he wants to spiritually progress, and to attract God, by his labours. For, if man doesn’t do that which he can, God won’t do what we as humans choose not to do. Man is unable to create a spiritual life on his own. Rather, the spiritual life is a gift of uncreated Grace."
(Archimandrite Symeon Kragiopoulos in pravimir.com)

FEAST OF ST. HERMAN...
While this Suinday's emphasis is on the pre-Nativity Sunday of the Forefathers, it is also the feast of one of America's 'spiritual' pioneers.  Here is his life:

QUOTE OF THE DAY...
"The pastures that this good shepherd has prepared for you, in which he has settled you for you to take your fill, are not various kinds of grasses and green things, among which some are sweet to the taste, some extremely bitter, which as the seasons succeed one another are sometimes there and sometimes not. Your pastures are the words of God and his commandments, and they have all been sown as sweet grasses. These pastures had been tasted by that man who said to God, “How sweet are your words to my palate, more so than honey and the honeycomb in my mouth!”
(St. Augustine in a sermon)

THIS SUNDAY...
December 13, 2015

Troparion — Tone 2
Through faith You justified the Forefathers, / betrothing through them the Church of the gentiles. / These saints exult in glory, / for from their seed came forth a glorious fruit: / She who bore You without seed. / So by their prayers, O Christ God, have mercy on us!

Kontakion — Tone 6
You did not worship the graven image, / O thrice-blessed ones, / but armed with the immaterial Essence of God, / you were glorified glorified in a trial by fire. / From the midst of unbearable flames you called on God, crying: / Hasten, O compassionate One! / Speedily come to our aid, / for You are merciful and able to do as You will.

FAITH FROM THE FATHERS...
ST. HERMAN OF ALASKA  [from a letter]:  “A true Christian is made by faith and love toward Christ. Our sins do not in the least hinder our Christianity, according to the word of the Savior Himself. He deigned to say: not the righteous have I come to call, but sinners to salvation; there is more joy in heaven over one who repents than over ninety righteous ones. Likewise concerning the sinful woman who touched His feet, He deigned to say to the Pharisee Simon: to one who has love, a great debt is forgiven, but from one who has no love, even a small debt will be demanded. From these judgments a Christian should bring himself to hope and joy, and not in the least accept an inflicted despair. Here one needs the shield of faith.”

QUOTE OF THE DAY...
"Our well-fed bodies decay and emit an offensive odor after death, whilst theirs [ascetics] remained fragrant and flourishing in life as well as after death. It is a wonderful thing: we, by building up, destroy our body; whilst they, by destroying, built up theirs; they, by only caring for the fragrance of their souls before God, obtained the fragrance of their bodies also."
(St. John of Kronstadt in 'My Life in Christ')

QUOTE OF THE DAY...
"The Lord was born in a cave to show that the whole world is one dark cave, which He alone can illumine. The Lord was born in Bethlehem— and Bethlehem means “the House of Bread”— to show that He is the only Bread of Life worthy of true men."
(Saint Nikolai Velimirovic in 'The Prologue')

CONCEPTION OF ST. ANNA...
While July is the focus of the miraculous St. Anna icon at the monastery, we don't want to let today pass without drawing attention to the first day in the earthly life of the Theotokos in the womb of her mother.
