There are so many Japanese restaurants in downtown San Mateo. Maru Maru is our favorite. Great quality food, very good value (prices are very reasonable esp. if you order the bento boxes), and very modern/pleasant atmosphere. Dennis-san is a really nice guy and he makes awesome sushi and rolls. Experiment and ask him to recommend rolls for you to try—you won't be disappointed.

I really like this place. The food is comparable with all the other Japanese places in town (there are 3 others across the street!) and the only reason I don't eat here more is my husband prefers the atmosphere at Izakaya Mai (even though the food there isn't as good, IMHO).

Wide and eclectic variety of sushi to choose from at this Japanese restaurant just on the edge of San Mateo's downtown core. The chef is a really nice guy, and the servers are attentive, if not too much so. Pretty good sushi for a pretty fair price.

Competition for Japanese food is tough in San Mateo. This one competes well on price (bento boxes for $7.99 and large spicy tuna rolls for $4.95 with good spicy flavor.) Maguro and salmon came as the sashimi pieces in the bento box when you select that as a choice. Nice interior, big, seems to be run by Koreans, takes credit card.

Dennis is great! All of the sushi is delicious--split a fried roll and a happy day special with a friend and call it a lunch!
