Distracted eating
We all do it sometimes. We grab a snack and plop down on the couch to watch a movie. Before we know it the whole thing is gone. We only meant to eat some of it, but downed it in one sitting. That is distracted eating at it's finest. It exemplifies the probl...

Meningitis Risks and Preventions
Meningitis is thankfully uncommon, but when it happens it can be deadly. Meningitis is an inflammation in the membranes around the brain and spinal cord (meninges). It is usually caused by a virus, but many bacteria and fungi can also infect the meninges. S...

This is my favorite #HPVVaccine  article. So much great information.
In June 2006, the first human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine was licensed for use in the U.S. Rather than celebrate the development of a vaccine to prevent a deadly form of cancer, many parents have…

Antibiotic Allergy or Just a Rash?
During the winter months more people get sick, so more people are treated with antibiotics. While antibiotics can help treat bacterial infections, they do carry risks. One of those risks is an allergic reaction. This is one of the reasons pediatricians avoi...

Stool colors & patterns in infants: What's normal & when should you worry?
Help! My baby is constipated. She hasn't pooped for days. We hear versions of this all the time. Constipation isn't defined by how often babies have a bowel movement. A breastfed baby might have a bowel movement every time he eats (and in between) or he mig...

What is a Bone Age?
Bone age is helpful in assessing a child who is shorter or taller than predicted based on parent heights or if a child has early or late pubertal changes. It is simply an x-ray of the child's hand and wrist. It involves minimal radiation and does not hurt. ...

It sounds like a lymph node -- see the paragraph just above the last picture. Ask your baby's doctor if that's what the bump is.

My son is only a month and currently got a lump on left lower back part of his head and i am scared. Is it common??? He's not in any pain and didnt hit his head that i know of.
Parents often worry about lumps and bumps on a baby's head unnecessarily. Babies normally have ridges and soft spots on their head for a while after birth. Many have a type of swollen gland that parents can feel when rubbing ...

This was more than a rafting trip - it was an experience! The guides (Andy, Jake, and Eli?) were hilarious and made the hour bus ride to and from the river fun. My too-cool-to-enjoy-myself teen even had fun. I think I even caught him laughing and singing along on the bus. We went with 3 generations (14 - 73 years old) and all had a blast. Two of our group took the kayak option and after lunch we all got to re-run the Anaconda on rafts or kayaks (or both), giving others an option to try the kayak. One kayak newbie flipped the kayak (he hadn't been able to practice on the slower parts of the river like those who took the kayak the whole trip) but the guides were quick to the rescue. It was fun going through the Anaconda as many times as we wanted. The water was refreshingly brisk so only one of my group jumped in when we got to the swimming areas but if the sun was out it would have felt great to get in. Lunch was fantastic. Even my picky eater went back for seconds! The photographer got some great shots of us to help remember and share the fun. I'd highly recommend this trip.

My two kids and I always have a great experience when we see Dr. Mock. She is thorough with the exam and in answering questions. When one of us (or all of us) is (are) borderline with needing a new prescription she is able to help weigh the pros and cons of new glasses, never pressuring for a quick change.
