When i was growing up my nick name was Keith "I'm gonna" Gelhorn. People thought I was stupid and would never amount to anything. My dream was to become a Social Worker but given my grades in high school, my principal told me "that given my performance in school, I would always be a failure."
Then after struggling through 6 years of college, I finally applied for the school of social work at the University of Victoria, only to be told that based on my grades at college, I would never succeed in Academia and should go get a trade.
In 2007 I completed trade school with a Red Seal in Plumbing and Gas Fitting...but always knew I was destined to be in the helping field.
In 2010, after a back injury at work and learning about ADHD Coaching, I went back to school to pursue that goal. When I expressed that goal at the Okanagan Community College, that goal was dismissed and I was told that my only realistic options with a Human Services diploma, were to work in a group home or a community workshop.
Instead of giving up and letting others dictate my future, i hopped on a plane to Nova Scotia, (6000km from home) and applied at Nova Scotia Community College - NSCC in Truro. I arrived 20 minutes late for my 30 minute appointment and honestly expected rejection again BUT that didn't happen. I was met by Joy Larusic, the most kind and encouraging woman who said "what an amazing idea, anything you need for support, we have your back.". That 10 minute conversation changed my entire life! Not only did she help me set up "The ADHD Empowerment Hour" for students in my first semester, she also got me my first client through Dalhousie University. This client didnt need a tutor or therapist, she needed someome who could relate, provide true empathy and help her get from a 73% to 85% in 6 weeks to get into vet school. I can't honestly remember exactly what we did to accomplish her goal, but we did it!
That was in February of 2012 and the official start of ADDvocacy ADHD & Life Skills Coaching Ltd.. Since then we've helped 100's of youth and adults living with ADHD, Learning Disabilities, Autism and co-occurring mental health challenges Anxiety and Depression being the most common that impact Executive Functioning. In addition, i've been able to share my personal experiences as a trainer WITH 1000's of Educators, Employers and Case Workers on how to boost productivity and the Selfesteem of Neurodiverse individuals.
It only took the encouragement of 1 person to change my entire life. I am forever grateful to Joy for being that person in my life.
Who has been that person in your life?
If you haven't found that person yet, what/who do you feel you need in your life to achieve your goals and go on to live a life filled with purpose and passion, that i finally got to begin to experience at the age of 36? http://ow.ly/w2VR30lh1Xz
