a better perspective on a common list...
By Leo Babauta. Many sites have created lists of things “every man should own”, coincidentally around the holiday shopping season. A reader suggested I create a Zen Habits version of this list. This list is definitive. Pen and notebook. For jotting down life lessons, and starting a novel.

I used to feel obligated to finish bad books or stay in restaurants I didn't like. Then I adopted Chris's rule, which I've used for years but recently noticed that he phrased more elegantly than me. If you don't like a book (including mine or any other), give it 50 pages max.

By Leo Babauta. Last night I received a phone call from a loved one, someone who I love deeply but have struggled with internally because I've been worried about his health. I want to help him, because I feel I'm losing him. I want to show him my habit method, so he can give up smoking and ...

As with Aron Ralston, the story of Chris McCandless has sharply divided observers, between those who see him as a hero for eschewing a materialistic, traditional western life and those who think he was an idiot who got in over his head and then paid the ultimate price in the Alaskan bush.

A good thought for the day: "When someone talks to you, instead of jumping in with something about yourself, just listen. Absorb. Reflect their thoughts back to them. Appreciate their beauty."
By Leo Babauta. When I first started simplifying my life, about 8 years ago, I remember my life being much busier. I would say yes to everything, and go to lots of social stuff, and drive everywhere doing a crazy amount of things, rushing wherever I went. By crazy I mean it can drive you a bit ...

what we're moving towards. once we close on the house we'll only have one bill left to pay: my biggest school loan. almost there! #debt #debtfree
By Leo Babauta. In 2005, one of the low points of my life, I had 5 kids, crippling debts, and was barely making it from paycheck to paycheck. I would shove my bills in a drawer, envelopes unopened, so I didn't have to deal with bills I couldn't pay. I would avoid the calls of collection agencies ...

By Leo Babauta. Recently I encouraged my 13-year-old daughter Maia to start a vegan cupcake business, and it's so exciting to watch her get started. As I talked to her about starting, she had some worries: She didn't know how. She didn't know what kind of business to create.

If you're like most adventurous people, you probably own a tent capable of handling a month at Everest Base Camp. Maybe not Camp 3, but Base Camp for sure. But the thing is, are you heading to EBC any time soon? Didn't think so. Are you taking that tent into conditions even close to what you ...

I've always taken my vehicles to Huffines for service and have always been extremely satisfied. I previously owned a Chevrolet Camaro, and they were always very helpful during services. I also take my wife's Nissan Xterra there for service, as I've always gotten quicker service and more straightforward responses from the service advisers at Huffines than the group at the Nissan dealership. I usually work with Frank Conti, who is very friendly and helpful. Since I've always been treated extremely well by the staff at Huffines, I ended up purchasing a new Chevy Cruze in January 2011. The sales staff wasn't overbearing as some other places I visited, and I ended up with a great deal. In June 2012, my Cruze was nearly destroyed in a hail storm. The crew at Huffines brought back to life! The turn around was great, and they even put me in a rental, even though it wasn't covered by my insurance company! The staff is knowledgeable and honest, they won't try to sell a bunch of extras. The facilities are immaculate, not some greasy shop. The service is quality. All around, Huffines is a great place to visit.
