I've seen some of these photographs before, but always worth a second look (bottom of the article has a link to the LoC collection).

In between discussing Chinese history and wandering Berlin (often at the same time - also saw the Ai Weiwei documentary, which was pretty good!), I  put some money towards funding a project put together by one of my  former students, who has a truly incredible eye & ability to connect with people.  This is a documentary about the Moso people in Yunnan, China - I'm very much looking forward to seeing the final result.

Minor musings on the problems of Western-centric game criticism (something that has rubbed me the wrong way for years: I think being cocooned in an Asia-centric environment for 5+ years has only deepened my irritation!)
I've been lucky during grad school to be ensconced in a place where East Asia matters a great deal and I have to spend precious little time explaining why ...

What's for dinner: asparagus, bacon, ricotta & goat cheese on homemade crust, which came out better after being frozen than fresh - I guess because it got a longer rise this go around.

Yeah, I can't say it was pizza connoisseur worthy, but it was pretty damn good!

Taking a break after cooking dinner & reading this from David Carlton (on the Musée d'Orsay, the male gaze, video games, art ...) - well worth a perusal.
On entering the Musée d'Orsay, you are confronted almost immediately with a sight that is familiar to anybody who plays video games, namely a textbook example of male gaze: This is Femme piquée pa...

Amazing set of photos. Looks like some of the commenters read this as an indictment of China, but this is pretty par for the course for a lot of Olympic structures. Guess we'll find out what's going to happen in London.
Already decaying infrastructure from the 2008 Summer Games should serve as a lesson to all cities that follow.

it's complicated. I wrote a response in the comments section to a question someone had in which I also covered my impression of the facilities. It's not that the facilities are entirely deserted everywhere, it's the fact that the stupid government refuses to open them for public use in most cases.

But, you're also right that this is not uncommon anywhere in the world post-Olympics.

On archiving (and how even middling-or-worse popular history can really knock a phrase or two out of the park)

In case anyone has missed it (like I did!), University of Hawai'i Press is having an amaaaaaaazing sale at the moment (better pricing than the UC Press sales of yore). I got 15 books for under $50 (including shipping) - the most expensive was $7.50, with the bulk coming in at under $3 & the cheapest at 75 cents - some were seriously pricey academic tomes!
