Trying to locate said swage-ing tool at Home Depot: Yeah, I need one of those like tools that, uh, it’s metal and heavy, for, um, giant pair of pliers, not bolt cutters, squishing things, no, not insulated crimps but sort of but bigger, aircraft cable, metal wire, wire rope, yeah, one of those um tools for squishing things, no, metal rings on to wire rope.

How is it that Rand Paul has a very different accent from Ron Paul?

He left Texas 28 years ago and moved to The South.  You can't keep the twang forever.  ;-)

This is a great new viewpoint on open source and how (not) to do it.  Even if you think you know all about open source (like I do, having contributed to the GNU project as early as 1988), you'll probably learn something worthwhile.

The author says strong copyleft has outlived its usefulness.  (Slide 17.)  I'd like to hear more about how/why that is.  There's a video somewhere that goes with these slides; I'll have to look it up and see whether he expands on that statement.
Talk given at FISL 2012 in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Video is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhgXQFk9noI

Obscure find of the day: mac-gphoto-enabler.

This simple shell script disables the OS X daemon that always grabs the USB port when you plug in a camera.  Then you can access the port using gphoto2 or any other program that isn't iPhoto.

Yes, you can tell OS X not to open an app, but that setting does not keep it from grabbing the USB port.

This is a picture of a resistor.

I wrote a program in Processing to render it.

Well, I like it.  That's the shape (very nearly) that the Platonic ideal of a resistor has in my mind.  I think most people would make the transition from central cylinder to end bumps more abrupt.

Dogpatch Bakehouse and Caffè at SFO.

dogpatch: rural, Appalachian.
caffè: sophisticated, European.

Somebody spent months creating this little snack stand, its branding, and its signage, and they never actually read the name they'd chosen?

And WTF is a bakehouse, anyway?  A semiliterate word for bakery?  How many English-speaking people know "Caffè" but don't know "Bakery"?

Yes, I'm at SFO at 5:30 AM.  Maybe that makes me grumpy.

I suppose C# could be labelled such as well.

I'm usually proud to be an Oregonian, but not at the moment.

Higher education funding cut 43% since 2008.
