"these self-organized dynamics are fundamentally non-linear phenomena, and non-linear phenomena in general depend critically on the interactions between parts: they necessarily disappear when parts are treated in isolation from one another, which is the basis for any analytic method. "

Do you have a modern, innovative office suite that allows you to make magic?

"The document that can do this magic is called a "Hybrid PDF", and anyone can make one using open source software. LibreOffice (and related packages like OpenOffice.org) have been able to make these editable PDFs for quite some time. A Hybrid PDF is a normal PDF file that any PDF reader can display, but with the added benefit that the original source document is also embedded in the file. Any suitably advanced office suite, such as LibreOffice, is able to retrieve the source and allow you to edit it."

*In order to do this kind of magic, you'll need to acquire LibreOffice at a monumental cost of... free :) *
I've been amazed by how few people know that you can make an editable PDF. So I decided to write about it today. Please feel free to distribute the how-to PDF I link to in the article!

Integrating channels of action, across tools :) Nice to have documents at hand, specially if we are faraway and want to support distance communication with a sense of «in here document/this document». Very nice move. The kind that only few social networks can offer. In this case, Google did another great step!

Google Docs in Google+ Hangouts

Last year we launched Hangouts with extras as a way to preview certain hangout features. (http://goo.gl/yXhB1) Google Docs integration was one such extra, and the Google+ community has used it for all sorts of awesome -- from trip planning and lecture notes to doodling and charades. Today I'm happy to announce that we're graduating Google Docs to the core Hangouts experience for all users.

To try it out, just click on the new “Docs” button inside your hangout:

- you can add an existing document, or upload a new one
- added documents are available as a list on the left-hand side
- you can switch between and collaboratively edit multiple documents at once

As always, let us know what you think in the comments, or via the “Send feedback” button!

OpenAIREplus enhanced publication:

"Its main objective is to facilitate the cross-linking of research publications to associated data and funding schemes, contributing to the Open Linked Data initiatives. (...) it will be possible to link from a scientific publication in the OpenAIRE/DRIVER systems to further information such as a dataset or grant information, in essence creating a richer, value added publication, i.e., an "enhanced publication". With the collaboration of three scientific domain communities, EBI for molecular biology data, DANS for social science and BADC for climate data, innovative underlying technical structures will be deployed to support the management of and inter-linking between associated scientific data. Metadata from these Open Access datasets will be harvested, enriched and stored, as is currently done for publications. End user services for enhanced publication visualization, creation and curation will be offered through the portal" [via www.dlib.org/]
