I just discovered that we've had enough donations to cover current server costs for https://wheretofind.me/ for a year. I'm floored—thank you all so much for the support and enthusiasm you've shown for something I thought was just gonna be a small use to a few people.

More https://wheretofind.me/ news: we're past 600 signups, and I've fixed a bunch of bugs and added a few features.

You can now put a text tag and quality on your links, and choose an icon for them (though we'll still try to best-guess the icon). The quality is just "low/medium/high", to convey how much you really use that service, and the tag is whatever you want: I'll be curious to see how people use them to organize content.

Let me know what works and what doesn't and I'll keep trying to make this better and useful!

We're past 300 users on Where to Find Me, which surprises me no end. I am glad this can be useful to people, but I know there's more I need to do.

I'm currently working with a few folks on a detailed policy and response to abuses of the service (most notably impersonation), and still trying to add some technical features. The most recent features I've added are nicknames on favstars: when you fav someone, you can also add a nickname that only you see to remind you who that username is.

Hey folks using https://wheretofind.me/ ! I have a new feature. Search!

Because I believe in privacy-first design, you have to opt in to search.

If you're logged in, you can go to https://wheretofind.me/aliases/ and add aliases, names someone might know you by and try to search for you under. You can also flip the "include me in search" toggle if you wanna be searchable.

All your aliases will show up on your profile, so, y'know, only include that really embarrassing one if you wanna.

I'm gonna tag +Joshua Fox in particular, since he asked this feature.

Everyone using https://wheretofind.me/, thank you so much! We passed 100 users while I wasn't looking, and it's really exciting. I hope this is useful to everyone—right now it's just the bare minimum, but I want to make it more useful to you all, while keeping it as aggressively simple as I can. Don't hesitate to get in touch and let me know what I can do to improve it for you.

In foo.py: In test_foo.py (running under pytest): It took me a tick to realize that the function definition was being evaluated at import time, including the values for the kwargs. Even though the body, of course, wasn’t being evaluated. I solved it with…

Hey, folks. So, yeah, G+ being sunsetted.

A community does not easily survive a transplant. Different people will use different alternatives that work for them, the set of people we talk with will change.

I've had a lot of important conversations here with a lot of you and I'd like to stay in touch. So I'll be keeping an eye out for where people say they're headed.

For my part, you can always find me on Mastodon, at https://mastodon.transneptune.net/@wlonk and I'll try to show up in other places where others are moving to.

There's a part of me that wants to take this as a chance to really work on an alternative to corporate-made and corporate-run social media. If you have my email and wanna talk about alternatives that center good safety and moderation controls, fostering conversations, and making a long-term archive (and are probably built on the ActivityPub standard), email me. If you don't have my email and want it, DM me.

Hey, if you're a US voter, let your senators know that Kavanaugh is an unacceptable nominee for the Supreme Court. Let them know by phone (consider https://5calls.org/issue/delay-kavanaugh-vote-fbi-investigation or https://5calls.org/issue/postpone-kavanaugh-vote-rape-allegations)

And you know what? Keep calling, after this. I promise it gets easier. The more you talk with your senators' staff, the more it becomes just a normal thing, and a thing that's easy for you to do. Pretty soon, who knows, you might show up in person for events they hold, and talk with them, and get heard.
