I assume you're testing this on stage, right? One thing that might be interesting to consider is the processor, I believe it's this one on socorro-processor1:

http://ark.intel.com/products/47926/Intel-Xeon-Processor-L5640-%2812M-Cache-2_26-GHz-5_86-GTs-Intel-QPI%29

Note "# of cores" and "# of threads" especially. Presumably there are 6 4-core processors (I bet phrawzty knows, could look up the HP model number probably).

I really like the concept of checking in some simpler representation of the code - some language subset, or an AST maybe. I have read a lot of ideas about this, the closest thing I know of to a "real" implementation is something like http://www.jetbrains.com/mps/concepts/

This could be done now through tooling I think, it would take a while for the overall culture to catch up (and surely some would refuse to let go of modifying the checked-in representation "by hand")

On Socorro I think we're conflating style checking and linting/static checking (e.g. pyflakes) a bit in our discussions generally, although that's not as much of an issue here in this post I think that style is super important for reading comprehension, maybe even moreso for such a whitespace-sensitive language as python.

The pep8 style checker makes it super easy to override individual rules such as the 79-char limit. I think the important thing for a project is to have a style guide, not that it needs to be the official upstream PEP8 (the PEP goes into this a bit). Overriding things is easy and a good thing to do.

That said, I am pretty sure we don't enforce style for Socorro checkins, just the Django app.
