It's super #USRP2  ethical repair climax! The device could not communicate over the network. After some attempts at firmware debugging, a pathetic looking signal was observed on one of the TXD traces going into the GigE PHY. This observation suggests damage to the trace or the driver controlling the relevant pin on the FPGA. A tiny red wire was placed to recycle the unnecessary TX_CLK path running between the GigE PHY and FPGA. This is possible because Gigabit Ethernet actually uses a separate 125 MHz clock called GTX_CLK. Pin constraints were patched and a new bitstream was generated to use the new signal path. Success! Ettus Research is a really cool company for making the hardware and software accessible for these kinds of modifications.

A PoE-enabled network moose appliance. Eyes are BlinkM RGB LEDs controlled through I2C bus which can respond to sysfs trigger events. This does just about everything you would expect a networked moose appliance to do, including functioning as an OpenVPN endpoint. Ideas for the future include adding a speech synthsizer and mouth control for the ultimate experience in home moose automation. The project could also greatly benefit from a #BeagleBoneBlackCase giveaway by Adafruit Industries!

Has anyone had success reflashing their RO firmware on the Samsung ARM Chromebook? I'd like to replace it with something that doesn't require pressing ^D to boot the system while in developer mode or risk formatting the stateful partition by pressing space key.

Here's the procedure to cause your new Samsung Chromebook's left audio channel to self destruct and, if you're lucky like me, burn your hand in the process. We both discovered this independently and by accident at the beginning of November. I don't recommend repeating the procedure: It works.

Last night I was looking into why sound wasn't working on my Samsung Chromebook under Fedora and noticed alsamixer could see a mixer called DAISY-I2S. I started incrementing gain levels on different channels to see if an audio file I was playing would eventually produce sound. That didn't have any effect, but I noticed there were some channels that were muted, so I began unmuting them one by one. One channel made a soft pop sound each time it was unmuted and I was actually able to play one of the notification sounds from /usr/share/sounds through it. Unfortunately, around this time I noticed a weird smell that I couldn't determine. I lifted up the Chromebook to see if it was the cause and immediately burned my hand on this speaker port which had become extremely hot. It seems that maybe the right registers were poked to put one of the components in a weird state where it began drawing a large amount of current and totally burned up. Beware!
