Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR A. Kosygin at a meeting with the Indians, 1971, Edmonton

In Edmonton, there was a celebration dedicated to the Cree Indians and was honoring their chief. Kosygin was very impressed by this ceremony and especially the chief’s headpiece, which he decided to try on. However, this caused a shock among the Crees, since no one except the chief was allowed to wear a hat. For a while this caused confusion between the Soviet delegation and representatives of the Indians, but soon the incident was exhausted. Obviously, Kosygin was explained what was the cause of the embarrassment, and he took off his hat. However, the photo of the chairman of the Soviet Council as the chief of the Crees was already made, and became history.

The photo was taken by Soviet photographer Vasily Yegorov at an international conference in Edmonton (Canada) in 1971.
