It is July 1st, Ya'll!  I cannot believe that one month of summer is already over!  I know we all don't want to think about the countdown to the start of school and all the work that back to school in August brings.   Yet, there are a few things that we can...

Creating Stronger Test Takers
This past week, I tutored students to pass the Ohio Graduation Test.  Students who need intervention to pass the OGT tend to fall into two categories - 1) students who have not learned content like how to identify main idea, make inferences, and apply liter...

Building Relationships with Other Teachers
Sometimes, when I don't know another teacher in my building very well, I feel awkward and unsure of how to approach them.  The copy room can become an uncomfortable space when you don't know a teacher and don't know what to say.   Over the last few years, I...

Organizing Education Pintrest Boards
When one of my college friends introduced me to this site called "Pinterest" I had no idea the great wonder that the site would become in my life.  Three years later I found myself with 73 boards and over 3,000 pins.  What is even crazier is that I had al...

I've Returned!
Source: http://i-a-t-g.tumblr.com I believe Ray Bradbury states my current feelings best -- "We are cups, constantly and quietly being filled.  The trick is knowing how to tip ourselves over and let the beautiful stuff out."  It has been months since I've u...

A Look Back at the Week: Writing with Students + Creative Poetry
This week I have done one of my favorite things, not just once but twice, with my students: writing!  When I was in high school, I hated writing - it was actually the thing I feared most about becoming an English teacher. I never felt like I could do it wel...

Thanks for sharing Megan.  As I read this, I can think of students I have who fall in this category who I have been struggling to show my love towards lately.  Thanks for the motivation and advice!  I think I struggle the most with Slugs.  I think it has to do with the total lack of interest.  I try to develop rapport with the Slugs about something completely outside of the the school building.  Like music, a tv show, something they are wearing, or just plain old asking how their day is going.  Kids want to see you care and want to feel cared for.
