CHUUG rocks. Unfortunately I missed the meeting last night, and that bums me out.
Why did I miss it? I didn't know it was happening. I didn't see an email, and I didn't have the foresight to create a recurring calendar event. Even if I had, I'd still have to do work to find out where the event was being held.
Some problems I see:
- Google'ing for CHUUG doesn't find this group in the first few pages of results
- Google+ is a awful for managing the busy-work around events, but great for discussion
- It's really hard for new people to discover CHUUG. I spent a month researching the tech community in CHS before moving here, and didn't find out about CHUUG until I was told word-of-mouth at a CDC event.
How can we fix this?
I'd like to try http://meetup.com
. It's been a valuable tool to me in the past for managing communication and other work surrounding an event. Meetup is also discoverable to a larger audience.
This doesn't imply we need to switch away from Google+. Google+ is a killer discussion forum with all the bells and whistles anyone could ask for, but it frankly blows at communicating to a larger audience that a meeting is going to occur, who's attending, and how to get there. I'd be happy to help out with the $72/yr fee for organizing a CHUUG group on meetup.com
. We can point interested people to this Google+ community if they land on meetup.com
and want to find out more.
How do people feel about extending the CHUUG footprint by adding a meetup.com
presence for the group?
