My friend and I went to Gaucho's last evening and had a wonderful time. We were initially seated in the bar which is not convenient to the salad bar. I asked to be seated in the main restaurant and they did so with pleasure and right away. The food was excellent and plentiful. The 35 item salad bar had all the makings for a beautiful green salad plus other great salads including an egg salad, chicken salad and several others that I didn't try. They also had smoked salmon and a large variety of fresh fruit. The truth is you could make a great meal just on the salad bar. Shelly was our waitress and she was great. The meats and sea food were beautifully seasoned and cooked to order (we both preferred medium rare to rare for our red meat). The desserts were gorgeous and tasted as good as they looked. Everyone treated us as though we were special and important customers. They even gave us a birthday discount though Jenn's birthday wasn't until Sunday, 4 days away. My only disappointment was that they apparently don't serve lamb on Wednesdays.

Please avoid this place. It has been the subject of many of my jokes for close to 2 years... HOWEVER, I'd HIGHLY recommend the place if you LOVE bacon wrapped chicken. It was offered at our table about 12 times. I felt like I was on starvation rations when it came to the "high quality" meats. They might as well call this a German steakhouse for prison camp workers, circa 1941. The pieces they cut for me would barely feed a small child; literally polished off in one bite. Ditto with the fish - small fillets made it to the table once or twice and were very underwhelming. I am fit and wasn't planning on eating $120 worth of meat and fish for $60. However, I doubt I received $10 worth of anything worthwhile! The funniest event I witnessed was to see a waiter come to the table with one rib (two rib bones) and CUT IT IN HALF for a friend of mine. I think that was the only time we saw ANY ribs. The waiter then turned and ran away with the rest. AWESOME!!! Get ready to weather some annoying sales tactics. I loved the main waitress at our table who already stuck it to us in every way, then suggested we could leave extra on the tip. Well done! One last note - the commercials I see on TV make me LOL. LOVED the outside dining scene. Yes, you too could dine outside if you want to feed the mosquito population of Porter County. Real classy. I'll come celebrate at Gauchos, when it CLOSES!!! I'll come pour 40 ounces out on the curb in a tribute to scam dining.

After reading other reviews, I was astonished. It seems like many are going to Gauchos looking for something different, perhaps a cheap buffet. Therefore, I have to provide my own feedback. First off, this is not a buffet. Those looking to a large abundance of low quality food and a noisy atmosphere should stick with Golden Coral. Personally, I’ve been there once and won’t go back. Also, this is a Brazilian steakhouse. So if you’re just looking for a great American style steak, go to Kelsey’s or Gino’s. They both have an awesome filet. Gauchos offers a more relaxed, longer meal. It’s a great place to go for the evening for dinner and drinks. But don’t be in a hurry. They have a large salad bar, plenty of salad items and cold foods. The meats at Guachos are very good. My favorite is the Picanha. Be sure to ask for a cut cooked to your liking, i.e. medium, well. My least favorite is the Brazilian Beef Tender. I find it a bit tough. They bring out meats and seafood on at regular intervals so you never have to wait long for food. If you happen to be lucky enough to be there on a night they have turkey, you’ll love it. It’s very tender and delicious. My wife and I have been to Guachos a couple of dozen times and we’ll go back. She prefers the seafood. She loves the crablegs and the Tilapia. If you have a favorite meat of seafood, all you have to do is ask and they will bring it out as soon as it’s prepared. As far as that goes, if you pass up some of the meats as they come out, they will ask you if you have a preference and go get it for you. Service has always been great. Even if you do get Lauryn to wait on you. BTW: she has given us excellent personalized serviced on a couple of occasions when we sat in the bar. The atmosphere is usually fairly quiet but also depends on if there are large parties with children around you. We prefer the bar atmosphere. It’s a bit more intimate for just the two of us. Plus, I think the décor is better in the bar. Sam, the owner, has stopped by our table on a couple of occasions checking on food and service. Now, some comments are correct. The bathrooms need updating. They’ve always been clean when I’ve gone in but the fixtures and old and need replaced. The walls in the dining room are covered in drapes. Many places do this including Gamba (great italian) and Tiebels. However, I do agree the drapes are hiding something, perhaps the fact that the walls need repair and painting. I also agree that Gauchos was better a couple of years ago. Their prices have gone up; $40 at the time of this review for a feast of meats. That’s fairly high since I can get a great filet at Gino’s for $34. Therefore, we normally go when we have a bogo coupon. Additionally, they do bring out the cheaper meats, chicken and pork, more than the beef. But I don’t blame them for doing this with all the people that go a place like this just to gorge themselves. So just be patient, wait for better meats, and enjoy. We also took my folks to Gauchos once and they both really enjoyd it as well. My mother devoured the shrimp. Don’t be fooled by the reviews, the food is very good, but it’s a Brazilian Steakhouse, so it’s going to be different. And lastly, for a special treat, try the fried pineapple for dessert. To the guy that went to Guachos at 10pm and was turned away because it was too late. Try going to Kelsey’s at 8pm on a Sunday night. Or even 9pm on a Saturday. Yep, That’s right! They’re getting ready to close.

Ha! I read Diane Teach's review & jus laugh. If ur dining experience was bad because of the ceiling & the wrong kind of fork, then u and your snobby friends should move to Hollywood & live the high class life I sure you'd like to make us think you can afford. Lol Anyway, this restaurant is fine. It provides a solid offering for the area & employs a great wait staff. Dont hesitate to try them out & if you come to jus eat & not expect a "life changin experience", then you'll enjoy it. :-)

This place is absolutely amazing. Don't believe what any of the naysayers are saying. First, the service is excellent. I you have the great fortune of having Ashley or Lauryn (they can be found in the bar most of the time) then you will be thoroughly pleased. The gauchos are extremely courteous, professional, and they will keep the plates piled as high as you want them. If anyone tells you they had a horrible experience they clearly have not gotten out of the Denny's mentality. Unfortunately, many in Northwest Indiana have not experienced fine dining or meat that hasn't been burned to a crisp and dried out to their liking. I cannot understand why anyone with half a brain would not speak highly of this restaurant.

Sorry, NOT impressed. Food sucked. Trying to pretend they are high class & there is nothing about the place, food, service, etc... that warrants their prices. My filet tasted Awful. I'm sure it had nothing to do with their Brazilian technique. I've worked in restaurants most all my life & the beef was old - tainted flavor that is easy to recognize. Can't believe that this place has been open as long as it has.

I will never return to this restaurant. The ceiling was stained with watermarks and looked like it was about to fall in on me. The bathrooms were dirty and very outdated. The whole place has a stench to it. There are these horrible drapes over the walls- I'm sure to hide something. The steak was raw, the cheese rolls were disgusting. Every time we asked for something the servers had to tell us that the restaurant didn't have it because there were too many people using them. i.e. a crab fork, a crab cracker, butter dishes, etc. I don't understand how you can be a restaurant and not have enough supplies for your dinner guests. Our server tried to get us what we needed however he was barely seen throughout the meal. There were six of us there and no one enjoyed the food. We ended up paying 70 or so dollars for the salad bar which was pretty good. The whole experience was not pleasant and very uncomfortable. I would definately not recommend this place to anyone who has even a slight bit of class. I'm sure people who aren't used to eating at a nice restaurant would like it here. Worst food I have ever eaten

To anyone that wrote a good review about this place, you must not have a good pallet. The food is below my ranking of garbage, period. I'm not just giving my opinion based on one experience there, I've been there multiple times but the first time was the only time I went willingly. The last time our friend chose there for her birthday even against our recommendations. We ordered our food and I didn't even finish my first serving of meat. It was bland, dry and a gigantic waste of money but we wanted our friend to have a good night so we went. RUN as fast as you can.
