According to the Surgeon General, 78 people die every day from opioid overdose. Overdose deaths have now surpassed homicides in Louisiana and nationwide. It is time to change the conversation around addiction as a moral failing, and promote the fact that addiction is a chronic disease. There is hope and help for opioid addiction, but we have to be willing to talk about it.

Please join us on Thursday April 20, 2017 at Xavier University of Louisiana for Truth Behind the Numbers a community forum that will look at the opioid crisis in Louisiana and why overdose deaths have surpassed homicides in the state.

The event which will take place from 6:30 to 8:30pm will also include a Q & A session, and a book signing with featured panelists Michael Cartwright, the CEO of American Addiction Centers, and Dr. Howard Wetsman, Chief Medical Officer of Townsend. Free copies of the books will be available.

On Thursday, March 23, 2017 Dr. Wetsman, Chef Medical Officer for Townsend will be discussing two presentations at the 10th National Counseling Advances in Las Vegas, Nevada. One of the conference's objectives is to recognize treatment approaches for successfully treating trauma, addictive disorders, co-occurring disorders and other psychological and behavioral issues.

At 10:30 a.m. Dr. Wetsman will be present "It’s Not Just Drug Addiction" which will analyze the words used to describe addiction. It will also look at the neurobiological findings that lay the foundation for the changing vocabulary about the disease.

At 2:00pm he will present "The Neurobiology of Addiction for Counselors" which will look at the biological model of addiction, that is consistent with the ASAM definition. The presentation will also discuss why some people need medical treatment and some do not.

"So even if the world outside is partying like it’s Mardi Gras, we who are offering addiction treatment to people, still have a way we can talk about the illness, foster recovery, and help others."

For Mardi Gras 2017 read Dr. Howard Wetsman's (Chief Medical Officer of Townsend) story about how certain traditions of Mardi Gras can be used to strengthen recovery rather than risk active addiction.
