Far gone are the days when you wrote Perl for the web in just CGI. Dancer, Catalyst and Mojolicious are the modern ways of going about it, with Mojo's version 8.0, code-named "Supervillain", being released just last week. Nikos Vaggalis discovers what the updated version has to offer.

The replica of the Turing-Welchman Bombe has proved that it is more than a museum exhibit. On September 21, in a live video link-up between The National Museum of Computing England and Poznan Poland where WWC2018 was taking place, it succeeded in cracking a message scrambled by an original Enigma machine.

At a launch event yesterday Amazon announced revamped versions of its Echo products and completely new hardware including a clock, a security camera, a smart plug and a microwave. To support the new devices there are new and updated developer tools, which are currently in Preview.

DARPA has committed to spending $2 billion on artificial intelligence systems for U.S. weaponry over the next five years in a new effort to make such systems more trusted and accepted by military commanders. But AI researchers may not be too keen given Googlers' outrage at Project Maven.

Google's AMP is controversial. Is it a Trojan horse that allows Google to take over the web, or is it a tool for delivering fast web pages that benefits everyone? Now, with new Open Governance for the project, surely it must be an open source force for good? Mike James thinks Google still has too much control.

Visual Studio Team Services (VSTS) is being split up into five separate services for Azure. The tools will now be collectively known as Azure DevOps. VSTS is Microsoft's application lifecycle management system. The features that until now have made up VSTS are now separate services.

Amazon has a $25,000 prize pool for a US-only contest for publishing a game skills for Echo Buttons. There's also €50,000 in prizes in an Alexa Skills Challenge on Games for developers in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, and Austria.
