Ageing (life span) may be linked to evolutionary effect says a new study performed by NECSI & Wyss in Boston.
Read more on Wyss website...

A study performed at the Cambridge–based New England Complex Systems Institute (NECSI) and the Wyss Institute has now identified a new evolutionary effect that shows how an active mechanism of life span control can improve success of a lineage over long time scales–helping to account for apparent exceptions to the traditional theoretical understanding of aging, and raising important possible implications for human medicine.

In the 60's, Eisenhower and Alvin Weinberg, who was then director of one of the US national laboratories, were concerned that the new driving force of universities (money) was actually displacing the original and natural one (ideas). Weinberg even said in a celebrated paper in Science that “one sees evidence of scientists spending money instead of thought. This is one of the most insidious effects of large-scale support of science.”

Interesting views that resonate in us.

The article I link to here is not the newest. But I find it very interesting. Thank you for digging it out, +Philip Moriarty

It is a discussion on the importance of what they call "poetry" and "bookkeeping" in successful science.

As always, there has to be a balance of all involved factors. There simply are no absolutes in life, strictly spoken.

What strikes me here is that this balance may be different for every researcher and for every investigation. It is, at any rate, a very good thing to raise and discuss things like the poetry and bookkeeping of science.

The body's organs are more complex than any factory. Attempts to mirror their physiology in the laboratory are getting closer to capturing their intricacies.

OverviewThe Organ-on-a-Chip World Congress focuses on an important and expanding field wherein cells are being assembled using microfluidics and Lab-on-a-Chip technologies in a functionally-relevant manner.  These clusters of "assembled cells" have functional significance and can mimic in vivo organ structure. Liver cells assembled on-board chips in a physiologically-relevant architecture using microfluidics can, for instance, be utilized for tox...
