-- yes, unfortunately. Even the so-called "good" public schools tend to be academically inadequate and politically slanted. The only ones that consistently perform well are charter and some private schools, and the teachers' unions are waging war on them as a result.
This has been going on a long time. When I taught at Wharton (1981-1994), my students were the cream of the crop...and most of them couldn't write a coherent paragraph, not to mention the multitudinous spelling and grammar mistakes. I told them if they didn't improve, those Harvard MBAs would eat them for lunch -- not actually true, but a good motivator. :)
